SCIENCE & SCILIFELAB PRIZE FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS

The Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists was established in 2013. A global prize aimed at rewarding scientists at an early stage of their careers.  The international prize is awarded annually to four young scientists for outstanding life science research based on a doctoral degree earned in the previous two years. 

ELIGIBILITY:

The Prize Categories:

Cell and Molecular Biology: Research in this category includes cellular and molecular processes at levels ranging from single molecule to single cell to tissue and organ systems.

Genomics, Proteomics and Systems Biology Approaches: Research in this category focuses on genomics, proteomics, integrative omics and systems biology approaches, inlcuding computational, to facilitate comprehensive understanding of living cells, organisms and species.

Ecology & Environment: Research in this category encompasses interactions between organisms and their environment, and how these processes are influenced by human activity.

Molecular Medicine: Research in this category aims at building on the molecular understanding of disease in humans to develop preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, including individualized medicine.

Entrants for the prize must have received their Ph.D. between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2024. Entrants may only apply once within this time period, and the work described in the entry must have been performed while the entrant was a graduate student. The prize is open to residents of all nations without regard to sex or race.

In addition to completing an online entry form applicants must submit an essay describing their thesis work in one of the qualified categories. The essay cannot exceed 1,000 words in length and may include one figure or table.

Applicants must also submit a one-page reference letter from their advisor or a member of their thesis committee with an assessment of the applicant and comment on the significance of the applicant’s research.

In addition, a list of citations, awards and relevant professional experience should be included, as well as an abstract of the thesis.

BENEFIT:

The grand prize winner receives $30,000 USD and each of the other three category winners receives $10,000 USD.

In addition, the grand prize winning essay is published in Science magazine and each of the other three winning essays are published at Science online.

Furthermore, all four of the award winners are invited to Sweden for the prize ceremony, held the same week as the Nobel Prize ceremony, attend a scientific symposium to present their work, and be invited to a series of social events in which they are able to network with notable scientific researchers in their fields. Each winner may also bring one guest to the festivities.

12TH INTERNATIONAL AWARD ON SCIENTIFIC AND NATURE ILLUSTRATION ILLUSTRACIENCIA

LOCATION: Spain

The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), through the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN-CSIC) and its Deputy Vice Presidency for Scientific Culture and Citizen Science (VACC-CSIC), and the Catalan Association of Science Communication (ACCC) organize the 12th “International Award on Scientific and Nature Illustration ILLUSTRACIENCIA”, an initiative that promotes scientific culture and scientific illustration as well as that encourages the development and knowledge of this discipline, long linked to science and scientific dissemination.

ELIGIBILITY:

This award is open to individuals and teams made up of adults 18 years old or older, regardless of their nationality and country of residence. The winners of the previous edition, the organizing committee, the members of the jury and the Illustraciencia Academy teachers are excluded from this call.

Each participant (single or team) may submit one single work, using the web form at the link www.Illustraciencia.info/participa, indicating their personal data and the details of the presented work, as well as the category in which it is registered. In the case of teams, the name and personal data of every member of the team must be indicated. It is also mandatory to indicate if Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been used for the presented work.

The work must have been created between January 1st 2024 and March 31st 2025. The subject of the illustrations must be related to science or nature and the technique is free. It is mandatory to indicate if Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been used for the presented work.

The size of the illustration must be uploaded at A4 (210 x 297mm) 100 DPI in RGB and it should not include any watermarks or text (except signatures, numbers, figure letters or symbols included in the art work).

The image file of the illustration should be named with the title of the proposal submitted. Example: Loligo-vulgaris.jpg

The participation form must include an informative text in Spanish, English or any other official Spanish language. In the case the text is not in Spanish, it must be provided also the corresponding Spanish version. The text must respond to the following characteristics:

The text must have an extension of 100 to 150 words.

The texts must be totally original and rigorous. The proposals which include plagiarism or a copied text from external not mentioned authors, will be excluded.

It must rigorously describe the species or elements represented and explain the scientific, informative or artistic interest with which the artwork has been created, as well as any scientific curiosity or relevant characteristic shown in the illustration.

Languages: the text may be written in Spanish, English, or any other official Spanish language. If it is not written in Spanish, the corresponding revised translation into Spanish must be included.

These requirements, as well as the quality of the texts, will be taken into consideration at the jury’s assessment.

BENEFIT:

The Illustraciencia Award will give a prize of 1,000 euros per winning work in each of the two categories, while the author of the Jury Mentions and the Mention of the public will receive a diploma. The 40 selected artworks will receive a digital accrediting certificate.
