AKO CAINE PRIZE AWARDS FOR AFRICAN WRITING, 2026

The 2026 AKO Caine Prize Award for African Writing is open for application. Entries must be submitted by a publisher. This includes publishers of physical and digital books, literary journals, magazines, and arts-oriented websites.

ELIGIBILITY:

The story must have been published in the five years preceding the submission deadline. For 2026 eligibility, the judges will only consider work published between 27th February 2021 and 27th February 2026.

Entries must be between 3,000 and 10,000 words in length

Writers must be over 18 years of age at the time of submission.

Self-published and unpublished short stories are not eligible.

Publishers are encouraged to submit multiple short stories as long as they do not submit more than one story by the same author.

Stories may only be entered for consideration for the Caine Prize for African Writing once. Unfortunately, this means that you may not resubmit a story for consideration, even if it was not selected for the shortlist.

Genres not eligible for entry include novels, children’s stories, factual writing, academic essays, plays, poetry, autobiography/biography, and any work that does not constitute a fictional short story.

Submissions must specify which African country the author comes from and the short story word count.

Publishers must obtain the consent of the author before submitting the short story.

When submitting digitally published short stories, kindly provide a PDF version. Alternatively, you may instead provide a PDF containing a link to the publication.

By submitting a story, publishers and writers agree to the conditions outlined above in the criteria, as well as those below in the Frequently Asked Questions section and Google Form. Shortlisted candidates will receive separate terms and conditions.

TEJUMOLA OLANIYAN CREATIVE WRITERS-IN-RESIDENCE FELLOWSHIP

The Africa Institute, Global Studies University invites applications for the Tejumola Olaniyan Creative Writers-in-Residence Fellowship, a distinguished program that celebrates and supports literary voices engaged in the creative expression of Africa and its diaspora in all forms and genres.

ELIGIBILITY:

The fellowship is open to both emerging and well-established creative writers.

A strong record of creative literary excellence, including awards, fellowships, or other forms of recognition.

Applicants must be actively working on a major literary project (a novel, memoir, collection of essays or poetry, film script, or a full-length play).

Applicants must have at least one published work (book, journal, or significant online platform) or a substantial portfolio demonstrating their commitment to writing.

Applicants working on themes related to Africa and the African diaspora are strongly encouraged to apply.

Priority will be given to applicants who employ innovative approaches to storytelling, form, or language are given priority.

Priority will be given to applicants whose work shows potential to contribute to critical literary culture, scholarship, or public discourse are given preference.

Application Requirement: CV/résumé of the applicant

A two-page summary (single space, font 12) of the project to be undertaken during the residency period, its significance, and a proposed date of completion.

One sample of published or unpublished writings and/or creative work to be evaluated.

BENEFIT:

The residency program welcomes applications from creative writers, including novelists, short story writers, playwrights, poets, and scriptwriters whose work relates to Africa and the African diaspora for a grant of 50,000 AED in total for the duration of the fellowship, which is inclusive of accommodation, a return airfare ticket, visa and the monthly stipend of 10,000 AED per month per fellow.
