UNIVERSITÄT LEIPZIG PHD PROGRAM – GLOBAL STUDIES PEACE AND SECURITY IN AFRICA

GESI and IPSS jointly offer a three-year interdisciplinary doctoral training programme in the field of Global and Area Studies (with a special emphasis on peace and security in Africa). The programme trains junior researchers and professionals in globalisation research.

ELIGIBILITY:

The Joint PhD Programme Global and Area Studies: Peace and Security in Africa offers a joint doctorate from the Leipzig University and Addis Ababa University. For every candidate the respective faculties sign a co-tutelle agreement.

Please note: The single most important document you submit for your application is the research proposal. It has to be of excellent academic quality showing that you are aware of the current status of research with thorough references to other scholar’s work. It further needs to propose an original idea that has not been investigated yet.

Students applying for this programme should write a research proposal related to peace and security studies and global studies.

Students will be part of the Graduate School of Global and Area Studies at Leipzig University as well as part of the Institute of Peace and Security Studies in Addis Ababa University. International students from outside of Ethiopia have to get their Master certificate certified by their Ministry of Foreign Affairs before they come to study.

The PhD courses are taught completely in English. German courses in preparation of the study period in Leipzig will be offered in cooperation with the Goethe Institute in Addis Ababa.

A selection committee with professors from both universities chose the pre-candidates. Chosen applicants will be invited to an interview before the final decision is taken. The programme starts in October every year. The application deadline is February 28.

BENEFIT:

Tuition fees for the programme will be €5,000 per study year.

UNIVERSITÄT LEIPZIG ERASMUS MUNDUS MASTER IN “GLOBAL STUDIES” (EMGS)

Application Deadline: March 15, 2025 (for Erasmus Mundus scholarship).

The Erasmus Mundus Master in “Global Studies” (EMGS) is offered by an international consortium of five high-profile European universities, together with partner universities all over the world. It provides excellent training for future careers both inside and outside academia, training experts who can analyze and navigate globalization processes from multiple perspectives.

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

A three-year bachelor’s degree or the recognized equivalent from an accredited institution in the humanities or social sciences, with a minimum of 15% global studies–relevant courses, e.g. courses in the field of History, Area Studies, Economics, Cultural Studies, Sociology, Political Science and Human Geography.

Excellent English skills: Proficiency in English needs to be proven with an official English certificate as listed below under “Application Documents”. Native English speakers must provide proof of knowledge of a language other than English at the A2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

Knowledge of another foreign language at the A2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (to be proven by a high school certificate and/or an internationally recognized test, score certificates, or equivalent proof of participation in language courses)

The recognition of the respective documents and degrees is based on the requirements set by the German Central Office for Foreign Education. In some countries, another year of study in a master’s programme might be necessary in order to be eligible for admission. See also the Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen.

BENEFIT:

The EMGS Consortium charges participation costs of €2,300 per year.

The participation costs cover the participation of all courses offered within the EMGS programme and also includes support for administrative and organizational issues. However, students will need to cover travel costs to the winter and summer schools.

Should a student fail to have met all of the required examination criteria by the end of the fourth semesters of the course full participation costs will be incurred for each further term the student need to be enrolled in order to complete the programme.

Students with special needs (behavioral, physical, emotional, or learning difficulties) can apply for financial support provided by additional funds of the Erasmus Mundus programme.
