UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA 2026 COMMONWEALTH SCHOLARSHIP DOCTORAL STUDIES

In support of South Africa’s participation in the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan, the University has made Commonwealth countries (excluding South African citizens).

These awards, known as the University of Pretoria Commonwealth Doctoral Scholarships, will be granted on a competitive basis.

ELIGIBILITY:

The University of Pretoria Commonwealth Doctoral Scholarship is open to applicants who are citizens of Commonwealth countries, excluding South African citizens.

Applicants must intend to undertake their doctoral studies at the University of Pretoria, with commencement in the 2026 academic year.

Applicants must have formally applied for admission to the University of Pretoria for the 2026 academic year.

Each applicant must have identified a potential supervisor at the University of Pretoria.

Applicants are required to have submitted their academic qualifications for evaluation to the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Further information is available at http://www.saqa.org.za.

Applicants must have completed their postgraduate Master’s degree at least two years prior to applying for admission in 2026.

Applicants older than 38 years of age at the time of application are ineligible for this scholarship.

Current or former Master’s or PhD students of the University of Pretoria are not eligible to apply

UP Commonwealth scholarship for PhD

BENEFIT:

The value of this Doctoral Scholarship will be R190 000 p.a. This amount must be used towards the following student costs: 2.1 Accommodation and living costs p.a. 2.2 Fees p.a. 2.2 Medical Aid for 2027 & 2028 (2026 medical aid at your own expense) 2.3 Books/Stationery. Note: The scholarship does not cover research running costs.

Additional costs covered by the University:

Flight ticket to RSA from home country on proof of study permit.

Return flight ticket to home country at the end of the completion of the programme as confirmed by the faculty.

Shuttle service on arrival in South Africa and return on completion of studies.

UP application fee and study visa costs, which will be refunded to the Applicant based on proof of receipts upon arrival at UP.

Supplementary Funds: The Commonwealth Scholarship holder may hold supplementary external bursaries/grants/scholarships with a maximum total value of awards, including this scholarship, of R300 000.00 p.a. The UP PhD Commonwealth Scholarship must be the primary award.

GOVERNMENT OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC SCHOLARSHIPS FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

LOCATION: Czech Republic

The Government of the Czech Republic offers scholarships within the framework of its Foreign Development Cooperation in support of the study of foreign nationals from developing countries listed below at public institutions of higher education in the Czech Republic. The deadline for submitting applications for the academic year 2026/2027 is on 30 September 2025 .

ELIGIBILITY:

Government scholarships for the academic year 2026/2027 are offered only to the citizens of the following countries:

Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus (democratic forces),

Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Zambia,

Cambodia, Sri Lanka,

Guatemala, Jordan.

Depending on the subject area, applicants are normally required to sit entrance examinations at the university concerned. Successful passing of entrance examinations constitutes a precondition for a scholarship award.

Selected follow-up Master’s study programmes (two-year-long programmes),

Selected Doctoral study programmes (three- to four-year-long programmes).

The condition for granting a scholarship for studying in a bachelor’s study program is the completion of secondary education corresponding to secondary education with a school-leaving examination in the Czech Republic

The condition for granting a scholarship for studies in a follow-up master’s study program is the completion of the bachelor’s study program.

The condition for granting a scholarship for study in a doctoral study program is the completion of a master’s study program.

An applicant for a Government scholarship to study in English is obliged to sit an online entrance English language test in the course of his/her application submission, which proves sufficient knowledge of English.

The scholarships are dedicated solely to promoting the studies of foreign nationals from developing and specific third countries. Neither a citizen of the Czech Republic nor a citizen of the European Union nor any other foreign national with a permanent residence permit in the territory of the Czech Republic may, therefore, apply for a scholarship. There is no legal claim to the scholarship award. 

Each applicant is obliged to fill in an electronic application form by 30 September 2025 at the latest. The successful applicant starts studying in the academic year 2026/2027.

By completing the application form, the applicant is successfully registered. The application is considered complete only after completing the general knowledge test and, if applicable, the English language test.
