LIECHTENSTEIN RENEWABLE ENERGY ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT (REED) & WOMEN IN RENEWABLE ENERGY ACCESS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS 

LOCATION: Africa

The Liechtenstein Renewable Energy Enterprise (REED) program provides monitored scholarships, supporting living expenses for students in renewable energy development and access programs across Africa, with a special emphasis on supporting women’s development in renewable energy.

The women in the renewable energy access scholarship program are focused on emerging female scholars and practitioners to help with additional support in thesis- and project-based early career development.

ELIGIBILITY:

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, academic excellence, commitment to community renewable energy access in the country as well as contribution to cultural and social diversity goals.

Scholarship awardees are required to:

Complete all mandatory courses in time

Maintain good grades and high performance standing

Submit academic progress reports each semester

Present a final report on experience, lessons and final academic results

Application Documents

Completed scholarship application – contact the university’s Admissions Office for the PDF form.

Two letters of recommendation, by university professors, supervisors and/or employers;

A Letter of Motivation of no more than four pages (up to 1,600 words) to explain your academic and professional goals and illustrate how these relate to future career plans in renewable energy access. The letter must describe:

your background;

why the scholarship is important to you;

goals and academic and/or career plans;

why the master course was chosen; and

wider community and societal implications of renewable energy based engineering programs in providing sustainable energy access for all.

Establishment of financial need – As many of the following as possible:

Certified copy of your most recent tax return or pay slip

Certified copy of your bank statements for the past six months

Certified copy of your parents’ most recent tax return if you are not employed

Other forms of documentation (corroboration by local administration etc.)

To apply, you must meet the admission requirements of participating university and its relevant masters program, and submit the admission application form plus the required material stipulated below.

BENEFIT:

Successful candidates will be awarded support for living expenses in order to help complete the program within the standard MSc program period.

LEIDEN UNIVERSITY EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP (LExS)

Application Deadline: 1 December 2026

LOCATION: The Netherlands

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS) is for excellent students joining a full-time Leiden University Master’s degree program—with the exception of LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programmes at Leiden Law School.

ELIGIBILITY:

Countries/nationalities: Non-EEA/non-EFTA students / Exception: All nationalities for Advanced LLMs & MSc Int. Relations and Diplomacy

Faculty: Archaeology, Humanities, Medicine/LUMC, Governance and Global Affairs, Law, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Science

Applicants for all Master’s programme at Leiden University starting in September, with the exception of : Leiden Law School’s LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programmes.

Applicants must have a non-EEA/non-EFTA* passport, and may not be eligible for student finance via the Dutch government (Studiefinanciering) – with the exceptions of students applying for the programmes listed below for which no nationality restrictions apply:

MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy

Students must have achieved excellent academic results in their previous study programme(s), which must be relevant to the Master’s programme for which they are applying. As an indication, the student is amongst the top 10% of graduates in their previous study programme. Note that proof of ranking is not required – this information is purely to indicate the level of competitiveness.

Apply online for admission to a Master’s programme at Leiden University and pay the application fee if applicable.

Note: It can take up to 3 working days to create/submit an application for admission, so start your application well before the LExS deadline. 

After submitting your application for admission, return to the Apply screen in your online application and click on Scholarships. If you are eligible to apply for the LExS, it will now be visible in the scholarships section.

Note: If you cannot see the LExS in your scholarships section, you have either not yet submitted your application for admission, missed the deadline, or are not eligible for the LExS.

    BENEFIT:

    The LExS is awarded for the duration of the study programme. There are five available levels of awards:

    €10,000 of the tuition fee

    € 15,000 of the tuition fee

    € 17,500 of the tuition fee

    € 18,500 of the tuition fee

    € 19,000 of the tuition fee

    If and when awarded a LExS, the level of the award is final and non-negotiable. The LExS is not a full scholarship and does not cover the full cost of your studies. Always keep in mind that a significant personal contribution will be required. Non-EEA LExS recipients must still submit ‘proof of sufficient funds’ for their student visa/residence permit application.

    Be aware that the LExS is a highly competitive scholarship. Leiden University only has around 25 LExS scholarships available each year, while over a thousand students apply for the scholarships.
