COMMONWEALTH SPLIT-SITE PHD SCHOLARSHIPS

LOCATION: United Kingdom

Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships are for candidates from low and middle income countries, as classified by the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC), in the Commonwealth, to conduct research at a university in the UK for 12 months.

ELIGIBILITY:

To apply for this scholarship, candidates must:

Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country.

Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.

Be registered for a PhD at a university in an eligible Commonwealth country by the time the scholarship starts in September 2025.

Ensure that an institutional or departmental link exists between the home university and proposed UK university. This link must be greater than simply a collaboration between individuals – see section on ‘Tenure and placement’ below for further details. Both supervisors must provide a supporting statement with further details of the link to ensure the application is eligible.

Be available to start academic study in the UK in September 2025.

By September 2025, hold a first degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) honours standard, or a lower second-class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree).

Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship.

Have provided all supporting documentation in the required format.

BENEFIT:

Each scholarship provides:

Approved airfare from the Scholar’s home country to the UK and return at the end of the award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor the cost of journeys made before the award is confirmed).

Approved tuition fees: full fees are covered by agreement between the CSC and the UK university, and Scholars are not liable to pay for any part of the tuition fee.

Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,378 per month, or £1,690 per month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at current levels).

Warm clothing allowance, where applicable.

Study travel grant towards the cost of study-related travel within the UK or overseas.

If a Scholar is widowed, divorced, or a single parent, child allowance of £590 per month for the first child, and £146 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if their children are living with them at the same address in the UK.

CRASSH VISITING FELLOWSHIPS FOR SCHOLARS FROM THE GLOBAL SOUTH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE

The Centre for Research in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CRASSH) at the University of Cambridge is inviting applications for funded Visiting Fellowships for scholars from the Global South. The purpose of these Fellowships is to provide opportunities for scholars working at higher education institutions in the Global South to exchange ideas with other researchers based at CRASSH and elsewhere in the University of Cambridge and to draw benefit from access to the University’s collections and resources. It is hoped that these visits will lead on to future collaborations and exchanges.

ELIGIBILITY:

For 2026, CRASSH will partner with the Department of History and Philosophy of Science. Applications are invited from scholars whose research is connected to the theme of science, politics and justice. This invites projects that study the ethics, politics and history of scientific, medical and technical knowledge-making and the multiple ways in which science has been leveraged by various groups in pursuit of justice. 

Up to three Visiting Fellows will be selected each year from different countries in the Global South whose research proposals respond to the call set out above. Check the further information tab on this page for more details on eligibility.

They invite applications from any discipline, including anthropology, archaeology, art history, digital humanities, ecology and environmental studies, history, philosophy, medical humanities, museum studies, science and technology studies, and sociology. Projects should aim to advance current understandings of science, politics, and justice through concrete case studies of science in action.

BENEFIT:

Return (economy fare) travel, single ensuite accommodation in Wolfson College, a subsistence allowance to help with additional everyday costs, desk space and access to a computer at CRASSH, full access to the University’s libraries and other collections, and to events and seminars run by CRASSH or other institutions in the University. The three-month in-person Fellowship will be followed by a nine-month digital Fellowship, allowing continued access to the University’s online events and resources.
