YALE UNIVERSITY PRESS ANNUAL DRAMA SERIES WORLDWIDE COMPETITION

Application Deadline: September 8, 2024 at midnight EST.

LOCATION: USA

The Yale Drama Series is seeking submissions for its 2025 playwriting competition. The winning play will be selected by the series’ current judge, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. The prize and publication are contingent on the playwright’s agreeing to the terms of the publishing agreement.

ELIGIBILITY:

There is no entry fee. Please follow these guidelines in preparing your manuscript:

This contest is restricted to plays written in the English language. Worldwide submissions are accepted.

Submissions must be original, unpublished full-length plays, with a minimum of 65 pages. Plays with less than 65 pages will not be considered.

Translations, adaptations, musicals, and children’s plays are not accepted.

The Yale Drama Series is intended to support emerging playwrights. Playwrights may win the competition only once.

Playwrights may submit only one manuscript per year. Only manuscripts authored by one playwright are eligible.

Plays that have been professionally produced or published are not eligible. Plays that have had a workshop, reading, or non-professional production or that have been published as an actor’s edition will be considered.

Plays may not be under option, commissioned, or scheduled for professional production or publication at the time of submission.

Plays must be typed/word-processed and page numbered. Plays with images are not accepted.

The Yale Drama Series reserves the right to reject any manuscript for any reason.

The Yale Drama Series reserves the right of the judge to not choose a winner for any given year of the competition and reserves the right to determine the ineligibility of a winner, in keeping with the spirit of the competition, and based upon the accomplishments of the author.

BENEFIT:

The winner of this annual competition will be awarded the David Charles Horn Prize of $10,000, publication of their manuscript by Yale University Press, and a celebratory event.

THE CAINE PRIZE FOR AFRICAN WRITING

Application Deadline: Sunday 31st March 2024 (12:00 GMT).

LOCATION: England

Applications for the The Caine Prize for African Writing are open. The aim of the program is to bring Afican writing to a wider audience using one annual literary award.

ELIGIBILITY:

The story must have been published in the five years preceding the submissions deadline. For 2024 eligibility, the judges will only consider work published between 1st April 2019 and 25th March 2024.

Entries must be more than 3,000 words or less than 10,000 words.

Entries must be submitted by a publisher. This includes publishers of physical and digital books, literary journals, magazines, and arts oriented websites.

Writers must be over 18 years of age at the time of submission.

Self-published and unpublished short stories are not eligible.

Publishers are encouraged to submit multiple short stories as long as they do not submit more than one story by the same author.

Stories may only be entered for consideration for The Caine Prize for African Writing once. Unfortunately, this means that you may not re-submit a story for consideration, even if it was not selected for the shortlist.

Genres not eligible for entry include: novels, children’s stories, factual writing, academic essays, plays, poetry, autobiography/biography, and any work that does not constitute a fictional short story.

Submissions must specify which African country the author comes from and the short story word count.

Publishers are required to upload a ‘publisher’s letter’ with each submission. See program website for more information.

BENEFIT:

£10,000 prize to be won.

The winner and shortlisted writers will be invited to participate in events in Africa, London and elsewhere should resources and circumstances permit. In these cases, there will be travel award granted to each of the shortlisted candidates.
