THE OPEN BOOK EARLY-CAREER FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM FOR SCIENCE JOURNALISTS

Applications for the 2024 fellowship period are open. Every year, The Open Notebook offers a paid, part-time fellowship program for early-career science journalists. During the course of this fellowship, fellows work with a mentor to plan, report, and write articles for publication at The Open Notebook and become part of the TON editorial team. 

ELIGIBILITY:

The fellowship is open to early-career science journalists with fewer than three years of regular professional science writing experience. Please note the following details:

Internships and student work do not count toward this requirement.

Exceptions to this requirement may be made for cases in which an applicant has more than three years of professional science writing experience but some or all of that experience is not in English.

Some training and/or experience in writing for the general public is a requirement for this fellowship.

International applicants are welcome. However, applications, including writing samples and letters of recommendation, must be in English. Materials translated into English from another language are acceptable.

TARBELL FELLOWSHIP FOR EARLY-CAREER JOURNALISTS

The Tarbell Fellowship is a one-year programme for early-career journalists interested in covering emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence. The programme incorporates expert speakers, feedback & mentorship from experienced journalists and networking events with experts from leading AI organisations.

The fellowship is a full time commitment. Journalism is a highly competitive industry, and we expect fellows to be completely focused on succeeding.

The fellowship is entirely remote. This enables us to support rising journalism talent from around the globe.

BENEFIT:

Fellows receive a 9-month placement at a major newsroom, participate in a study group covering AI governance & technical fundamentals, and attend a 2 week journalism summit in Oxford. The Tarbell Fellowship provides a stipend of up to $50,000 to support these placements.
