SCHMIDT SCIENCE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (SSF) PROGRAM 

Application Period: May 19 through June 1, 2026.

The Schmidt Science Fellows (SSF) Program aims to expand the horizons of the next generation of leaders and innovators in the natural sciences, engineering, mathematics, and computing. The program is administrated by Schmidt Futures, an organization established by Google’s former CEO Eric Schmidt, in partnership with the Rhodes Trust and is supported by many of the world’s leading scientific thinkers, industry leaders, and institutions.

ELIGIBILITY:

The program addresses outstanding doctoral researchers who combine keen scientific curiosity with the capability of cooperation, wish to make a major contribution to science and society by their work, and are ready to focus on a discipline that is different from their existing area of expertise during the funding period.

Applications from individuals are encouraged regardless of age, disability, gender, gender identity, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy or maternity, parental status, marital or civil partner status, race, color, ethnic or national origin, nationality, religion, or belief.

The doctorate should be completed between May 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026.

In order to be eligible for nomination and potential selection as a Schmidt Science Fellow, candidates must meet the following requirements:

Be able to start their fellowship in July 2027 or October 2027 and available from April 2027 to July 2028 to attend onboarding activities, the in-person Science Leadership Program convenings, and the annual Schmidt Science Fellows Interdisciplinary Science Summit

Graduate degree in the natural sciences, Engineering, Mathematics or Computing with a commitment to interdisciplinary science

The program addresses outstanding doctoral candidates from selected institutions who combine a strong scientific curiosity with the ability to collaborate and who are willing to work in a scientific field outside their previous research activities during the funding period.

Have completed or expect to complete all of the requirements for the conferral of their doctorate in one of these fields between May 1, 2026, and June 30, 2027

KIT can submit up to seven nominations in this call.

BENEFIT:

Stipend of US $110,000 per year  (for up to two years, a total of up to $220,000 of support during their fellowship) for research

Participation in leadership and innovation trainings at a self-chosen leading academic institution worldwide

BARBRO KLEIN FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME 2027-2028 AT SWEDISH COLLEGIUM FOR ADVANCED STUDY (SCAS)

LOCATION: Sweden

The Barbro Klein Residential Fellowship at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS) Programme intends to advance the study of cultural diversity in a global perspective. 

ELIGIBILITY:

The fellowship is open to scholars from across disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, with an emphasis on research on cultural and social diversity, cultural heritage and creativity, societal structures and public resistance, and varieties of cultural expressions in local and global perspectives.

The fellowship programme encourages, but is not limited to, applications from talented younger scholars in non-Western countries and of underrepresented genders.

At the time of application, the candidate must have held a PhD (or equivalent doctoral degree) for at least three years.

Applicants must have a promising track record of independent achievements beyond the post-doctoral level, including significant publications, and be active in international fora.

Candidates are not required to hold a university position at the time of application.

A curriculum vitae (not exceeding 4 pages)

A description of your intended research project (not exceeding 1500 words, excluding bibliography if any)

A list of your major articles (up to ten) in international peer-reviewed journals and/or major research monographs or edited volumes

One article of your choice (or chapter in an edited book, or chapter from a monograph by you), representing your scholarship. The article does not have to be related to your proposed research project, but it has to be in English.

An account of why you wish to be at SCAS (rather than at another institute for advanced study) (not exceeding 100 words)

An account of how you would benefit from a stay at SCAS (not exceeding 100 words) 

An account of how you would contribute to the academic and social environment at SCAS (not exceeding 100 words) 

A copy of your PhD diploma

(Optional) up to 3 letters of reference (Please note that letters of reference must be uploaded by the candidate by the application deadline.) It is not possible for referees to upload references into the online application system or send them to SCAS.)

    BENEFIT:

    Fellows normally receive a monthly salary. However, the Collegium does not match fellows’ salaries at their home university/institute, and fellows are asked to try to obtain other resources for their support, such as sabbatical salaries and/or grants.   

    In most cases the Collegium will provide and pay for accommodation for fellows who do not live in the Stockholm–Uppsala region (please see our website). When possible, the Collegium also tries to offer accommodation to fellows from Stockholm who are not able to commute.
