UM GLOBAL STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP

The Global Studies bachelor-level study program trains students to understand and develop solutions for complex global issues, crossing disciplinary and geographical boundaries. The study program offers students the opportunity to perform a field study in the global south, develop an intervention for a societal problem presented by a NGO, government, agency, firm or a school and write an interdisciplinary bachelor thesis.

ELIGIBILITY:

All candidates must meet the following requirements:

You hold the nationality of a country in the Global South, here defined as countries in Africa, Asia (including the Middle-East), Latin-America and the Caribbean based on the definition of the OECD in column 1; least developed, column 2;low income , column 3 lower middle-income or Venezuela  and meet the requirements for obtaining an entry visa and residence permit for the Netherlands. Please check this website before you apply to see in which country you have to collect your MVV visa for the Netherlands.

If you already have a residence permit for another Schengen country , you can only apply if this residence permit is still valid until at least 2 September 2025. If your residence permit expires before 2 September 2025 you can only apply for the Scholarship from your home country via a MVV visa application. You do not have a dual nationality from a country in the Global North

You have never participated in a degree-seeking higher education programme in the Netherlands. Students who have completed exchange programmes in the Netherlands are welcome to apply

You are not older than 35 years of age on 1 September 2025

You agree to become an active Global Studies and UM ambassador during and after your studies, by committing to share your experiences during at least one (information) session for students and/or other stakeholders

You have applied for admission  to the Global Studies study programme at UM for the 2025-2026 academic year

DAAD IN-COUNTRY/IN-REGION MASTER’S SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA AT FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY AKURE, NIGERIA

As part of the „In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme“, DAAD offers scholarships for Master’s studies. The program is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and designed primarily for university staff in the first line, whilst also catering to the public sector demand of academically trained personnel.

The target group for scholarships is graduates from Sub-Saharan Africa with a first academic degree if applying for a Master’s programme, who want to pursue Master’s courses, either

in their home country (In-Country scholarships designed for students who study in their home country or in the country for which they have a residence permit.) or

in another Sub-Saharan Africa country (In-Region scholarships designed for students who want to participate in a study programme in a country of their home region (here: Sub-Saharan /outside their home country/in the country for which they do not have a residence permit).

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants for a Master’s degree

graduates with a first academic degree, who have successfully completed a three-year university degree with above average results (at least: Second Class/Upper Division or equivalent, if applicable) Candidates who cannot provide a Second Class/Upper Division or a higher result are not eligible

clearly show motivation and strong commitment;

have a thorough knowledge of the language of instruction;

have completed their last university degree not more than 6 years ago at the time of application;

must be nationals or permanent residents of a Sub-Saharan African country;

should be

a staff member of a public university,

or a candidate considered for teaching or research staff recruitment,

or from the public sector and/or

Alumni of the DAFI program

Fresh graduates, professionals, and other candidates who do not fit in the above-mentioned areas are also invited to apply for the program.

Female applicants, refugees with recognized refugee status and candidates from other less privileged regions or groups are especially encouraged to participate in the program.

Please note: the Federal University of Technology might have additional requirements for admission to the university.

The In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Program supports studies in subject areas with strong relevance to national development.

Scholarships at the Federal University of Technology are available for the following program: Master in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

BENEFIT:

The scholarship covers:

Tuition Fees

Study and research allowance :460 EUR annually

Thesis publishing costs once towards the end of scholarship: 400 EUR

Monthly Scholarship (Accommodation, Food etc.) monthly:

500 EUR In-Region

400 EUR In-Country

Travel allowance (In-Region only) usually twice (beginning/ end of scholarship)

Health Insurance (In-Region only) annually

Additional Benefits:

DAAD In-Country/In-Region scholarship holders in the framework of PhD programs are also encouraged to apply for a short-term research stay in Germany for 3 up to 6 months.

The short-term research scholarship includes:

a monthly scholarship payment for living costs

health/accident/personal liability insurance

a flat-rate travel allowance
