UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD WOLFSON HARRISON PHYSICS SCHOLARSHIP

The Wolfson Harrison Physics Scholarship is generously funded by Dr Simon Harrison. Dr. Harrison is an alumnus of Wolfson College and the Department of Physics, having completed a DPhil in Applied Physics at Oxford. He retains a strong connection with Wolfson College and takes a keen interest in the work and progress of the students supported by his Scholarship. The scholarship is offered in partnership with the Oxford University Clarendon Fund for 2026-27.

ELIGIBILITY:

Open to any applicant who is applying for a DPhil based in the Department of Physics in any branch of Physics.

The scholarship is offered in partnership with the Clarendon Fund for 2026-27 entry. Clarendon scholars are selected for their outstanding academic merit and potential and are therefore highly competitive. 

There is no separate application process for this scholarship. All applicants must apply to the University of Oxford under the standard procedures for graduate degrees for 2026-27.

Applications for all scholarships should be submitted to the University of Oxford under the standard procedures before the December or January deadline, whichever is relevant to your course. Unless specifically stated below, scholarships do not require a separate application in order for applicants to be considered.

Students applying for UKRI (UK Research and Innovation) graduate funding may also be considered for a Wolfson-partnered UKRI award. As there are specific eligibility requirements for UKRI awards, information should be sought from the department, faculty, or the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT).

Many of Wolfson’s scholarships are partnered with the Oxford University Clarendon Fund. You will be automatically considered for Clarendon if you apply by the December or January deadline, whichever is relevant to your course. You do not need to submit a separate application. Clarendon scholars are selected for their outstanding academic merit and potential and are therefore highly competitive. More information on the Clarendon Fund can be found here.

Preference will be given to applicants who have listed Wolfson as their first-choice college when two (or more) candidates are of equal academic merit. Any queries about Wolfson scholarships should be directed to the Academic Registrar..

Value of awards:

Course fees and a grant for living costs for full-time students up to the UKRI Minimum Doctoral Stipend (£20,780 in 2025-26) for the duration of fee liability; part-time students will receive a proportional study support grant.

SIR WILLIAM DUNN SCHOOL OF PATHOLOGY UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD PHD SCHOLARSHIP

Application Deadline: Early December 2024

The DPhil in Molecular Cell Biology in Health and Disease at the Dunn School is their flagship PhD programme for graduate students. Every year they admit up to 16 students from all over the world and provide them with 4 years of hands-on research experience, comprehensive training and a full range of opportunities to fully develop their potential and become the next leaders in their field of choice.

ELIGIBILITY:

They have no restrictions on nationality, and our current graduate community represents over 30 countries. Most of our students come from outside the UK. If you are offered a funded place on our programme, we will cover the cost of the international fees.

If you are an international student, after completing your PhD you are entitled to remain in the UK for a further 3 years on a flexible Graduate Visa.

Apart from a short induction period, there is no other compulsory coursework in our PhD programme. However, you will have access to a comprehensive skills training programme over the four years with them. This includes workshops, seminars and symposia. One of the highlights is their annual Graduate Student’s Symposium, where students have the opportunity to present posters and talk about their ongoing work.

There are also other training opportunities outside our PhD programme. As a member of the University, you will have access to the full range of Oxford’s training courses. The Dunn School also runs workshops and talks covering a variety of topics that are open to all members of the department. If you need access to a training course not available in Oxford, we also have internal funding schemes to support your career development goals.

If you miss the application deadline for the funded programme (early December), you can also do a PhD at the Dunn School via other routes.

BENEFIT:

Most applicants awarded a place through our PhD programme application process have their university and college fees covered, and will also receive a generous tax-free stipend (currently £21,737pa for 24/25) and research expenses, training and travel allowance (£5,300pa).
