FALLING WALLS GLOBAL CALL

The Falling Walls Global Call is an international competition format that brings together science enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds. They are looking for the most recent and innovative Science Breakthroughs of the Year! They encourage and invite nominations and applications from all over the world. To help make the Falling Walls Science Summit 2025 the celebration that excellent science deserves, they launch the Falling Walls Global Call each year.

ELIGIBILITY:

The Falling Walls Global Call is composed of the following categories:

Life Sciences
The scientific study of life and organisms e.g. biology, neuroscience, zoology.

Physical Sciences
The observation and understanding of natural phenomena of the earth, atmosphere and space, e.g. chemistry, physics, astronomy.

Engineering & Technology
The practical application of science and mathematics to every-day life, e.g. artificial intelligence, information technology, mechanical engineering.

Social Sciences & Humanities
The institutions and functioning of human society and the interpersonal relationships of individuals as members of society, e.g. politics, economics, philosophy.

Art & Science
Artists whose work is inspired and influenced by science, which sheds light on societal issues, natural phenomena or simply the wonder of scientific discoveries.

Science Start-ups (Falling Walls Venture)
Innovative start-ups that have translated breakthrough scientific thinking into promising business models.

Science Engagement (Falling Walls Engage)
Forms of participatory science engagement initiatives that generate mutual learning between, and mutual benefits for, science and society.

Women’s* Impact Award (Female Science Talents)
Excellence in interdisciplinary research and engagement contributing to gender equality, diversity in science and academia, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. *Falling Walls Female Science Talents uses an inclusive definition of women and welcomes submissions from cis and trans women, genderqueer and non-binary people.

If you’re interested in participating in the Emerging Talents category (Falling Walls Lab) for students & early-career professionals, you can apply directly to an international Falling Walls Lab via the Falling Walls website by clicking here. Please note that the application process, as well as the deadlines, are different from the Global Call.

You can either nominate outstanding research or apply with your own project.

Our goal is to find excellent and groundbreaking research projects in the different categories. With recent “breakthrough research” we are specifically looking for projects that address global challenges and represent scientific knowledge in an innovative way. We encourage an interdisciplinary approach to science.

For nominations, we invite leading academic institutions, universities, research organisations, companies, private and public research centres, academies, research funders, foundations, and individuals to nominate the bright minds behind the latest breakthroughs and outstanding science projects.

DOUG PENSINGER SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY FUND 

Application Opens: March 15 ; Deadline: 1 May 2025

LOCATION: USA

The Doug Pensinger Photography Fund supports emerging and early-career sports photographers. Submissions can only be made through the application process on Picter.

ELIGIBILITY:

The Doug Pensinger Photography Fund supports emerging and early-career sports photographers. Photographers with more than 3 years cumulative paid professional sports photography experience are considered beyond the scope of the DPPF’s programs.

DPPF programs accept international applicants, but the DPPF is unable to award grants to photographers from countries against which the U.S. has active sanctions.

Previous DPPF grant recipients are not eligible to apply.

The application will be live on the Picter platform beginning on March 15.

The deadline is 11:59pm on May 1, according to your time zone (determined by the IP address on your computer.)

Resume: Must include dates and be in English. Please note that in addition to demonstrating that you are a serious aspiring sports photographer, the resume is also the tool that the DPPF uses to determine that your level of experience does not exceed the limits of eligibility. Entry is FREE

Professional Bio: 1500-character maximum

Portfolio: 20 sports photography images (action and portrait both accepted), minimum size 1500px long side. All 20 required images must be taken on or after 1/1/2021. 15 of the required 20 images must be taken on or after 1/1/2023

Optional Mentorship Essay: Up to three Primary Grant winners will be chosen to receive a year-long mentorship during which they will receive access to leading industry professionals on the DPPF Advisory Board. Applying for a mentorship is not required to compete for a DPPF grant. More information on the DPPF mentorships is here.
Mentorship applicants are required to answer the following question: How would you benefit from a mentorship with members of the DPPF’s Advisory Board? (1500-character maximum)

BENEFIT:

7 photographers will be chosen to receive $5,000 grants to be spent on career development. They will also receive an expenses-paid trip to the 2026 DPPF Sports Photography Gathering.

Additional Opportunities (essays required, see below)

Up to 3 of those seven grant recipients will be chosen to receive a year-long mentorship with leading industry professionals on the DPPF Advisory Board.

Up to 3 additional applications may be chosen for Development Grants of $2,500.
