TARBELL GRANTS FOR ORIGINAL REPORTING ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE JOURNALISM (UP TO $15,000)

Application Deadline: by the end of the day on September 14th, 2025.

LOCATION: USA

As artificial intelligence grows more advanced, the technology and the people building it grow increasingly consequential. They believe journalism plays a crucial role in helping the public understand AI — and in holding companies and policymakers to account.

They seek to fund forward-looking stories, examining how today’s technical advancements and policy decisions lay the groundwork for how artificial intelligence will shape our future. In particular, we seek to fund reporting on five focus areas:

Investigations into frontier AI companies

National and international AI policymaking

Integration of AI in governments and militaries

AI capabilities, safeguards, and evaluations

Future of work and society in an age of advanced AI

ELIGIBILITY:

They welcome submissions from all experienced journalists and media creators: both staff writers/editors/producers and freelancers are welcome to apply. Journalists with an investigative background are particularly encouraged to apply. A background in reporting on AI and/or technology is desirable but not mandatory.

You do not need to have an outlet secured before applying, although we encourage it. If you can’t secure a letter of interest from an editor before your application, we’ll ask you to obtain one before we distribute any funding (see template). Your publication or distribution platform of choice must be able to accept grant funding for stories.

When evaluating applications, they look for:

Potential for Impact. We care about stories that make a difference. We want the reporting we enable to help society navigate the challenges ushered in by increasingly capable and widespread AI systems, whether that be by raising awareness of an underdiscussed harm or catalyzing policy change.

Reach. We hope grantees’ stories will be read, heard, or viewed widely, and by people with decision-making power. We prefer to fund stories that are likely to be published in established and influential outlets.

Journalistic experience. We look to fund journalists with a track record of impressive reporting. We tend to only fund journalists who have written at least one piece like the original journalism they’re proposing, whether that’s an ambitious investigation or a captivating explainer.

Feasibility. We look for pitches and budgets that demonstrate a realistic plan for how to pull off the proposed story.

If you have any questions about the application process, please contact michel@tarbellfellowship.org. To be considered, apply by the end of the day on September 14th, 2025.

They welcome applications from anywhere in the world. While certain countries occasionally present problems when disbursing charitable grants, they make every effort to disburse all grants in full while following the letter and spirit of all relevant laws and regulations. They do not disburse grants to any individual or organization listed on the OFAC List of Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons.

BENEFIT:

Tarbell offers grants of $1,000 – $15,000 to support original reporting published in established outlets, whether from freelancers or staff. They primarily focus on written journalism, but they also fund journalism in other formats.

UNIL MASTERS EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIPS, SWITZERLAND

Application Opening Date: September 2025; Deadline: 1 November 2025

LOCATION: Switzerland

UNIL awards around ten excellence scholarships each year, exclusively to students who have graduated from a foreign university and whose academic results are of a very high standard.

ELIGIBILITY:

The list of all master’s degrees at UNIL for which it is possible to apply can be found here.

Candidates must have graduated only from a foreign university: their qualification/university degree must be deemed equivalent to a Swiss university bachelor’s degree (180 ECTS credits). If the Masters Scholarship application file is complete, the Admissions Office (SII) will decide if the candidate is formally eligible. If this is the case, the application file will be forwarded to the faculty, which will take a decision on whether the candidate is admitted to the chosen master programme or not.

To have obtained a foreign university degree considered equivalent to a Swiss university bachelor’s before the beginning of the master’s program at UNIL.

To have distinguished yourself during your studies, especially through particularly brilliant academic results.

To have a language level of at least C1 (according to the European Language Portfolio global scale) in French or at least C1 in English according to the language in which your chosen master is taught (to check on the programme’s page).

Not to be registered at UNIL

To have paid the CHF 200.00 Administrative fees (see document, “list of documents for an application”).

The application form for the Master’s Scholarship also serves as an application for admission to the chosen Master’s program (and hence as a matriculation form at UNIL): you therefore do not need to apply for the master’s degree at the Admission Office (SII) of UNIL.

The application for the academic year 2025/2026 is closed. The application for the academic year 2026/2027 will open in September 2025 and the deadline will be 1 November 2025.

There is no age limit to apply for the Master Scholarship. However, for candidates from countries subject to visa restrictions, a higher age as well as a completed first master’s degree may have an influence on the obtention of a visa (difficult or impossible to obtain). They recommend verifying with the Swiss diplomatic representation in your country before applying.

Withdrawal from the master programme will lead to the suspension of the scholarship.

BENEFIT:

The scholarship is granted for the minimum statutory period of the programme chosen by the student. It amounts to CHF 1,600 (for more details, please refer to Article 10 of the “General conditions for the award of a Master’s Excellence Scholarship”).

Students offered a scholarship will be exempt from the fixed registration fees for the courses, with the exception of the CHF 80.00 fees to be paid each semester.
