UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA AFFILIATED FELLOWSHIPS MASTER’S PROGRAM

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies offers approximately 50 Affiliated Fellowships each year to meritorious students for full-time study and/or research leading to a graduate degree. Awards are made on the basis of academic excellence, with applications open to current and prospective full-time UBC graduate students.

ELIGIBILITY:

Academic Standing: Students with a minimum first-class standing in each of the last two years of full-time study are eligible to apply. GPA is calculated using all courses taken in a given year. For UBC courses, first-class standing is 80% and higher. At other universities, first-class standing is determined from marking keys that accompany transcripts. For transcripts that are not accompanied by marking keys, applicants should consult with their UBC graduate program staff.

Citizenship: All students, regardless of citizenship, are eligible to apply. However, Canadian citizens and permanent residents are required to apply for Canada Graduate Research Scholarships-Master’s (CGRS M) (or doctoral funding from CIHRNSERC, or SSHRC), if they are eligible to do so, to additionally be considered for Affiliated funding.

Fields of Study / program of study: Students must be enrolled in, have applied for, or will apply for full-time admission to an eligible graduate program. Eligible graduate program must have a significant research component.  A significant research component is considered to be original, autonomous research that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level as a requirement for completion of the program.

With the exception of those programs listed below, students in all fields of graduate study are eligible to apply. Exceptions:

Programs that are not administered by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (such as MBA, MM, MDS)

Programs that do not include a significant research component (i.e., coursework-based programs such as MPPGA, MOT, MPH, MPT, and MKIN)

Doctor of Pharmacy

Student Status: Applicants who will be registered full-time graduate students at UBC’s Vancouver campus as of September 2026 are eligible to apply (current and prospective UBC students are both eligible to apply).

Affiliated Fellowship applicants (such as international students) must submit their application materials to their UBC graduate program. The deadline by which applications for Master’s-level funding must be submitted to the applicant’s UBC graduate program is 1 December 2025 before 5:00 pm PT.

BENEFIT:

Fellowship values range from $175 to $16,000.

DOHA INSTITUTE FOR GRADUATE STUDIES DOCTORAL AND MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMS

LOCATION: Qatar

Doha Institute for Graduate Studies offers a wide variety of scholarships annually to attract academically qualified students from within and outside the State of Qatar. The scholarships vary; some are awarded on the basis of merit and academic competition, while others are based on financial need.

ELIGIBILITY:

Doctoral Studies: All admitted students can apply for a scholarship through the scholarship application form. The Admissions Office sends the application form to all eligible students. Students are given the opportunity to submit the application with all official and required documents.​​

Admission requirements of the first phase:

The applicant must be accepted into the institution.

The applicant must be unable to afford the costs of pursuing a doctoral degree and have no other scholarships.

The scholarship covers two semesters during which the student must complete the courses of the first phase. In case of failing to complete them in that period, the student shall pay the additional fees as determined by the institution.

Admission Requirements of the second phase: (full-time to read the prospectus):

The student’s GPA shall not be less than 3.5 in first-phase courses.

This scholarship covers one academic year.

Admission Requirements of the third phase: (Dissertation writing):

The student must complete the tasks of the prospectus phase and must pass the comprehensive test by the end of the second phase.

The scholarship covers two academic years, which can be extended by submitting a reasoned extension request and obtaining the approvals of the Director of the Doctoral Studies Board and the Vice President for Academic Affairs.​

Master’s Programs:

Tamim Scholarship: These scholarships are based on merit and academic excellence. It is dedicated to the most distinguished Qatari, Residents and international students in the Arab world. 

Sanad Scholarship: These scholarships are based on the financial needs of students. It is dedicated to Qataris, Residents in Qatar and international students. 

​​All admitted students can apply for a scholarship through the scholarship application form. The Admissions Office sends the application form to all eligible students. Students are given the opportunity to submit the application with all official and required documents.​

No student may combine the scholarships of the Institute with any other scholarship, whatever the source thereof.

Only students who have a good academic standing continue to benefit from the Institute’s scholarships. The Institute may, In accordance with its procedures, withdraw scholarships from students who violate this requirement.

The scholarships offered by the Institute shall not benefit the students enrolled in the Executive Masters or Diploma programs or specialized certificates.

Scholarships offered by the Institute shall not benefit students who have previously benefited from the same scholarship in a previous period of study in any of the programs of the Institute, whether or not they are awarded a degree.

BENEFIT:

Tamim Scholarship: Scholarship includes full tuition fees coverage. International students from outside Qatar will benefit from having free accommodation​ in institute dormitories, a monthly stipend, and health insurance.

Sanad Scholarship: Scholarships include covering a program’s fees (10 to 100 %). International students from outside Qatar will benefit from having their full tuition fees covered, in addition to free accommodation in institute dormitories, a monthly stipend, and health insurance.​​​
