UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN MASTERCARD FOUNDATION SCHOLARS PROGRAM

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants should:

Be a citizen of an African country, including South Africa;

Be applying for their first bachelor’s degree or an eligible taught postgraduate programme at UCT including:

A postgraduate diploma offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences;

An honours degree offered by any of UCT’s six faculties; or 

A coursework master’s programme offered by any of UCT’s six faculties;

Demonstrate academic talent and a commitment to excellence;

Face significant social and economic barriers to accessing higher education;

Demonstrate potential for transformative and ethical leadership; and

Be committed to serving their communities and contributing to positive change.

You should be:

Academically talented with a demonstrated commitment to learning and a drive to complete your education.

Limited in your ability to access education owing to significant financial barriers.

Committed to investing in your community through the skills and knowledge that you acquire.

A future leader committed to ethical transformation and making a positive contribution to your community and broader society.

Fields of study at UCT: Commerce, Engineering & the Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, and Science. 

For applicants to a UCT bachelor’s degree, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program application deadline is 30 September 2026.

For applicants to an eligible postgraduate diploma in the Faculty of Health Sciences or an honours degree or master’s programme at UCT, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program application deadline is 31 October 2026.

BENEFIT:

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is considered to be full-cost and will include full cover for the following (for awardees) as recorded in the Terms of Reference and Conditions of Award document available on The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UCT website:

Reimbursement of costs incurred for visa application processing

An economy class air ticket to Cape Town South Africa for awardees who are i) citizens and/or residents of a Sub-Saharan country other than South Africa or ii) residing in South Africa but outside of Cape Town

Full tuition fees and international student fees

Accommodation in the student housing system at the University of Cape Town

Meals through the student housing system at the University of Cape Town

Medical cover with a recommended medical aid service provider

A living stipend to be used to cover ad hoc expenses pertaining to your studies

A book allowance to purchase the prescribed textbooks required for your degree programme

Costs related to community activities as prescribed by the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Cape Town

Access to an internship opportunity

An economy class air ticket home upon completion of studies, for awardees who are i) citizens of and/or residents of a Sub-Saharan country other than South Africa or ii) residing in South Africa but outside of Cape Town

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN QUEENSLAND INTERNATIONAL STIPEND AND FEE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP (DPHD)

UniSQ offers an International PhD Stipend and Fees Scholarship for international students studying or commencing the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 2027. Applications in all areas of research are welcome, but these should be aligned with UniSQ’s flagship areas. 

ELIGIBILITY:

To be eligible, applicants must:

Have completed a bachelor’s degree with first-class honors, or equivalent level;

Be eligible to be enrolled full-time on-campus in the phd program at UniSQ. 

Be an international student, not an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident; and

Commence or continue study in 2027.

Applicants will be assessed on:

Academic achievement (e.g., class of honours or equivalent; performance on postgraduate degree; academic prizes and awards)

Research capability (e.g., research publications in high-quality journals; research presentations at conferences; research internship experience; evidence of creative works, if applicable)

Research project and environment (e.g., alignment with UniSQ research priorities; research relevant to Australian research context; external support for the proposed research; impacts of the proposed research; clear articulation of resources required for successful completion)

Supervisory team (e.g., consult with the supervisory team to demonstrate publication records in high-quality journals; complementary expertise; supervisor capacity; resource support for the proposed research)

Curriculum vitae (including research publications and/or presentations)

Preliminary Research Thesis Topic Proposal;

Documentation confirming citizenship; and

Education qualifications (testamur and academic transcripts for all undergraduate and postgraduate awards).

Students applying for a scholarship should discuss the flagship area most closely aligned to their proposed research with their potential supervisor and select this flagship in the application system.

Stipend and fee scholarships are applied for as a single application within the online portal and are not awarded separately.

Each flagship scholarship offers an optional Industry Stream, which requires a mandatory 60-day industry internship. Co-funded scholarships and industry-funded stipend top-ups are highly desirable.  This stream requires a Letter of Support completed by your industry partner. Applicants and/or their prospective supervisor are responsible for identifying an industry partner. To be eligible, continuing students must be within 18 months of starting full-time studies or 36 months of part-time studies. Consult the Senior Coordinator (Commercialisation and Partnerships) before applying to ensure your internship meets UniSQ requirements.

Value

Stipend of AUD $39,000 per annum.

Tuition fees for a maximum period of three years of full-time equivalent study, paid by UniSQ. Periods of study already undertaken towards the degree will be deducted from the scholarship.
