SHAKIRA CHOONARA YOUNG AFRICAN SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The Shakira Choonara Young African Scholarship Award is awarded each year to a deserving final year student at either the undergraduate or postgraduate level (Honors, Masters, PhD). The student must be pursuing a university degree and have a track record of academic excellence (70% or more in the current and previous years of study). Studies in the broader development field will be supported, desirable fields include health sciences and gender studies.

ELIGIBILITY:

Youth between the ages of 21-35 years-old

The applicant must be a citizen of any of the 54 African states

The applicant must be in the final year of studies (undergraduate or postgraduate) at an African university

Demonstrate financial need i.e. require the scholarship to settle final year tuition fees in order to complete their academic degree

A proven track record of academic excellence

They strongly encourage young women and youth from marginalized populations to apply. Only online applications will be accepted, incomplete applications will not be considered. Due to the high volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

BENEFIT:

The scholarship supports final year tuition fees for a disadvantaged student.

WITS-TUB-UNILAG URBAN LAB MASTER SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAN STUDENTS

The Wits-TUB-UNILAG scholarship call is now open for sub-saharan African nationals. The call is for potential masters students who would like to study the Master of Urban Studies in the field of Urban Management MUS (UM) at Wits University in Johannesburg.

ELIGIBILITY:

The scholarships apply to the 1 year full time degree of Master of Urban Studies in the field of Urban Management MUS (UM) at Wits University in Johannesburg, supported by the Wits-TUBUNILAG Urban Lab programme.

This call is open for applicants who are from sub-Saharan African countries other than South Africa. A separate call for South Africans will be open soon. For all applicants whose highest degree was not obtained in South Africa, a proof of application for assessment of their degrees by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) must be attached to the scholarship application.

Selected students will be required to be self-sufficient from February to April 2025, as their living allowance will be paid in the month of May. They will be responsible for organizing their own travel to Johannesburg, their accommodation in Johannesburg and other related costs.

The due date to apply for admission into the MUS (UM) is 31 July 2024. The due date to apply for the scholarship is 30 September 2024.

BENEFIT:

The master‘s scholarship covers the duration of one academic year. Successful candidates will be expected to sign a contract stipulating the conditions of the scholarship. The scholarship includes:

Full tuition fee,

Monthly stipend (living expenses covering: subsistence expenses and accommodation expenses),

Travel from home country/place of origin,

Student medical aid (12 months).
