UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN MARGARET CARLAW – MUSIC PHD SCHOLARSHIP

Applications are invited for a scholarship from graduates with a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree in Music, or an equivalent qualification, undertaking full-time PhD studies within the Department of Music at the University of Aberdeen beginning in the 2024-25 academic year. Applicants starting a PhD in either October 2024 or January 2025 are eligible to apply. Applicants must hold an offer of admission for the PhD before applying for the scholarship.

ELIGIBILITY:

There are two Margaret Carlaw – Music PhD Scholarships available. They will be awarded to students undertaking a PhD within the Department of Music at the University of Aberdeen in any area of music beginning in the academic year 2024-25.

Applicants of any fee status are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

The scholarships will be awarded based of merit and musical talent in any area of music (i.e. composition or musicology).

To apply, please submit a CV including your University of Aberdeen Applicant Reference Number, at least one example of your recent work (i.e. a composition or essay) and a covering letter with an outline of your proposed programme of research, to:

BENEFIT:

Each scholarship is valued at £4,000 per year for the three-year duration of the full-time PhD degree. The annual scholarship payments will be disbursed in two equal parts, the first instalment of £2,000 at the start of the academic year and the second instalment of £2,000 at the start of the second half session. The award is subject to satisfactory progress over the period, and an annual review will take place.

THINK TRADE, THINK GREEN: COMMONWEALTH INNOVATIVE YOUTH ESSAY AWARD

The Commonwealth Secretariat is pleased to launch the Think Trade, Think Green: Commonwealth Innovative Youth Essay Award Competition.

ELIGIBILITY:

This competition, brought to you by the Trade and Youth teams of the Commonwealth Secretariat, invites young researchers and students aged 18-29 to share their insights on a crucial topic: How can trade and trade policy address an aspect of the climate crisis in your country?

Essays must be a maximum of 2,000 words (including in-text references and footnotes, excluding reference list)

Full referencing in any style (in-text and reference list)

Entries should be submitted as a single PDF or Word file, 1.5 spacing, Times New Roman font

BENEFIT:

First prize: £1,000

Second and third prizes: £500 each

The top three essays will be published as part of the Trade Competitiveness Briefing Series and launched at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa in October.
