MCGRAW FELLOWSHIPFOR BUSINESS JOURNALISM

Application Deadline: October 6, 2024

LOCATION: USA

Are you a journalist with a great idea for a high-impact story that “Follows the Money” but few resources to get it done? The McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism would like to hear from you.

The Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Center for Business Journalism provides experienced journalists with grants up to $15,000 and the editorial support needed to produce deeply reported enterprise and investigative stories that delve into critical economic, financial or business issues across a wide array of subjects.

ELIGIBILITY:

The McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism is open to anyone with at least five years professional experience in journalism. We support work by freelance journalists, as well as by reporters and editors currently working at a news organization or a journalism non-profit. In the latter case, reporters and editors can apply directly in the name of their organization.

Applicants should submit a well-focused story proposal of no more than three pages through the accompanying online form. Think of it as pitch, much like you would submit to an editor at a newspaper, magazine, audio or digital outlet: give us enough preliminary reporting and documentation to demonstrate that the story is solid.

No budget is required at the time of application. Applicants chosen as finalists will be asked to provide an estimated budget at that time.

BENEFIT:

The Fellowship provides a grant of up to $15,000 for each project.

AAAS KAVLI SCIENCE JOURNALISM AWARDS

Application Deadline: August 1, 2024.

LOCATION: USA

Since their inception in 1945, the AAAS Science Journalism Awards have honored professional journalists for distinguished reporting on the sciences, engineering, and mathematics. In recognition of a generous endowment by The Kavli Foundation, the awards now are called the AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards, and the contest is open to journalists worldwide.

ELIGIBILITY:

The awards are open to reporters doing work for independent news organizations around the world. Articles must be readily accessible to the public by subscription, newsstand sales or online access. If the submitted work was published or broadcast in a language other than English, you must provide an English translation. See online FAQ for further discussion.

You cannot enter the same story or stories in two different categories, nor may you enter a story both as an individual entry and as part of a group of stories.

At their discretion, judges and AAAS staff may move entries between categories.

Access to entries: If an outlet has a paywall or limited access (such as no more than five free stories per month), the entrant MUST provide password access for the story links or, preferably, readable PDFs of the content. Failure to provide accessible content will result in disqualification.

Entry limit: Entrants may submit up to THREE entries in all (across one or more categories).

The following are not eligible for the AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards:

Items published originally in AAAS publications or produced by AAAS.

Items by employees of AAAS (including those on the masthead of Science magazine) or The Kavli Foundation.

Winners of the 2023 awards are not eligible. Individuals who have won three times are no longer eligible.

BENEFIT:

Two awards will be given in each of the Categories, a Gold Award worth $5,000 and a Silver Award worth $3,500. (One winner for each award also may receive reasonable travel, airport transfer, hotel, and per diem meal expenses to attend an awards ceremony in February 2025 if such ceremony is held on-site rather than virtually.)
