MURDOCH UNIVERSITY FULLY FUNDED PHD SCHOLARSHIP: COPPER ORE MINERALOGY AND ECONOMIC GEOLOGY

LOCATION: Australia

This PhD is part of a coordinated, industry-linked copper research program funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and undertaken by Murdoch University in partnership with BHP. The program spans economic geology, mineral characterization, extractive metallurgy, impurity management, and techno-economic and environmental assessment. Each PhD has its own objectives, methods, and deliverables, while researchers exchange data and insights where beneficial.

ELIGIBILITY:

They care about how you think and whether you can develop into an independent researcher. Applicants should have:

A suitable academic background for this project (see above).

A first-class honours degree, a Master’s degree with a substantial research component, or an equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline.

Evidence of strong research potential, such as a high-quality thesis, publication, substantial research project, laboratory or modelling experience, or a project you can discuss with real depth.

Strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

English language proficiency meeting Murdoch University HDR admission requirements, where applicable.

Required backgrounds: economic geology, mineralogy, geochemistry, geometallurgy, extractive metallurgy, mineral exploration/earth sciences, or related areas.

BENEFIT:

Fully funded scholarship:

Living Stipend: AUD $37,000 per year (tax-free) for three years, with a six-month extension available subject to satisfactory progress.

Tuition Fees: Fully covered for all students. Domestic students incur no tuition fees; international students receive a tuition fee waiver valued at ~AUD $44,000 per year for up to four years.

Research Funding: Generous project operating budget for equipment, consumables, analytical work, conference travel, and (where relevant) travel to major national research facilities such as the Australian Synchrotron and/or the Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering.

Location & Commencement: Murdoch University (Perth, Western Australia). Commencing as soon as practicable.

ASIAN PACIFIC UNIVERSITY MEXT SCHOLARSHIP (EMBASSY RECOMMENDATION)

LOCATION: Japan

This scholarship is provided by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) through the recommendation of the Japanese embassy in the applicant’s home country.

ELIGIBILITY:

To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must first apply through the Japanese embassy. After receiving the primary screening results from the embassy, applicants will then submit certain documents to APU. Most embassies accept applications around April each year, but please contact the embassy in your home country to confirm their application procedures.

Intend to study abroad in Japan from overseas

Not have Japanese nationality and be a national of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan

Be born on or after April 2, 1992

Be willing to learn Japanese, be interested in Japan, and be willing to deepen your understanding of Japan after arriving in Japan

MBA applicants only: Possess three years of full-time work experience (including full-time internship) by the time of enrollment to APU, preferably in a field related to the desired area of study or possess equivalent project or organizational experience

IMPORTANT

As per Japanese Government regulations, recipients of the MEXT Embassy Recommendation Scholarship will not be able to depart from their countries prior to April 1, 2027.

As such, you will not be able to participate in the APU Spring Entrance Ceremony or part of the Orientation Week, including important academic guidance sessions.

Should you wish to travel to Japan earlier to participate in these events, you will be required to self-fund your travel. Note that this will not be reimbursed by the scholarship.

Please note that the above only applies to applicants enrolling in April. Applicants enrolling in September should be able to travel to Japan in time for the APU Orientation Week.
