AFREXIMBANK-EDORDU RESEARCH COMPETITION (USD 45,000)

The Afreximbank-Edordu Research Competition invites postgraduate students across Africa and participating Caribbean states to produce rigorous, original research on the issues defining the continent’s economic trajectory: trade, finance, integration, and sustainable development.

The competition honors the intellectual legacy of Mr. Christopher Edordu, Pioneer President of Afreximbank, whose vision shaped the institution’s commitment to African economic sovereignty.

ELIGIBILITY:

The Afreximbank-Edordu Research Competition is open to postgraduate students (Master’s or PhD) who are currently enrolled at an accredited tertiary institution on the African continent or in an eligible CARICOM state and who hold nationality of an African country or an eligible CARICOM state.

Eligible CARICOM states are Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Suriname.

Postgraduate students (Master’s or PhD) currently enrolled in a tertiary institution in Africa or in a participating CARICOM state.

Submissions must be original, unpublished research papers that are not under consideration for publication elsewhere at the time of submission.

Papers must address one of the themes announced by the competition for the relevant cycle.

Submissions may be written in any African Union official language: Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, or Kiswahili and will be translated into English for jury evaluation.

Papers must be between 3,000 and 5,000 words, excluding references, tables, and figures.

Papers must follow a recognised academic citation style (APA, Chicago, or Harvard) and be submitted as a PDF or Word document through the official competition portal.

BENEFIT:

First Prize: USD 20,000,

Second Prize: USD 15,000,

Third Prize: USD 10,000.

FORREST RESEARCH FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIPS

Forrest Fellowships are offered to early-stage postdoctoral researchers who have outstanding academic profiles and who have already made significant personal research contributions within and beyond their discipline. Forrest Fellows will have been among the top-performing students in their undergraduate and graduate cohorts. 

ELIGIBILITY:

Forrest Fellowships are open to both domestic and international applicants, from any country.

To be eligible to apply applicants must be in their final year of PhD or no more than two years post PhD conferral. For applications submitted in 2026 – with Fellowship commencement in 2027 – applicants must have had their PhD conferred on or after 1 January 2024, or will have successfully completed all the requirements for the award of their PhD by 31 December 2026.

Be intending to reside at Forrest Hall for the duration of the fellowship (exemptions may be considered by the Governors of the Forrest Research Foundation).

To take up a Forrest Research Foundation Fellowship, an awardee must:
Have been offered and accepted an employment contract at a Western Australian university. The Forrest Foundation will liaise with the nominated university to issue the employment contract to successful fellowship applicants.

Have received their PhD conferral before taking up their appointment.

Take up the Forrest Fellowship and commence employment at the relevant university within 12 months of being awarded the Fellowship.

Agree to reporting their progress to the Forrest Research Foundation Director and the Minderoo Foundation each year.

BENEFIT:

The Forrest Research Foundation will provide funding for:

Salary: Salary consistent with a Level A Step 8 appointment (for example, the University of Western Australia salary for this appointment is $112,371 in 2026) plus 17% superannuation

Accommodation Allowance: An accommodation allowance of $25,740 per annum in 2026 (subject to marginal tax rate)

Research and travel allowance: A once-off research and travel allowance of $12,000. This allowance is available for approved research-related expenses, overseas research, and conference travel. 

Relocation allowance: All interstate and international Fellows can apply for a relocation allowance, including an economy airfare to Perth, which can be discussed with the Director if successful.

Forrest Fellows will support the general mission of the Forrest Research Foundation which could include providing mentoring, ambassadorship, and leadership to Forrest Scholars, Forrest Hall, and the Forrest Research Foundation. Appointments at Level
