SWISS GOVERNMENT EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIPS 

Application Opens: 20th August, 2026; Deadline: 27th November 2026

LOCATION: Switzerland

The scholarship enables selected applicants to carry out a one-year research project as part of their doctoral studies at a Swiss higher education institution or recognized research institute. Valid only for full-time research in Switzerland.

    ELIGIBILITY:

    Target Group:

    Highly qualified early-career researchers from all academic fields who are pursuing a PhD in their home country, including young medical doctors. A-Z list of all countries and territories

    Priority will be given to individuals who have not previously studied or conducted research in Switzerland (see eligibility criteria for exceptions).

    Criteria:

    Master’s degree or equivalent completed by 31 July 2027 (for ETH Zurich: 30 June 2027).

    Date of birth after 31 December 1991.

    Detailed research plan with a timeline specifying key milestones and activities.

    Applicants must have a letter of support from an academic supervisor in Switzerland (including a short CV).

    If the applicant already resides in Switzerland, the date of entry must not be earlier than 1 August 2026 (submit a copy of the registration confirmation or residence permit).

    Selection Criteria:

    Academic profile, research competence, and motivation

    Originality and methodological quality of the project

    Quality of supervision and potential for future collaboration

    Duration:

    Maximum of 12 months (6 months at minimum)

    No extensions possible

    Start date: 1 September 2027

    Key Elements of the Scholarship Application

    Complete CV including educational background, degrees, awards, positions, publications, teaching, and practical experience.

    Letter of motivation (max. 2 pages): reasons for staying in Switzerland and the significance for future career and professional plans after the scholarship.

    Research proposal: a detailed research plan with a timeline specifying key milestones and activities. To be submitted on FCS/ESKAS form (max. 5 pages including a summary for non-specialists). The form can be downloaded in the online application.

    Letter of support from an academic supervisor at a Swiss higher education institution.

    Short CV (max. 2 pages) from this academic supervisor.

    Academic supervision required: An academic supervisor at a Swiss university is required for all scholarship applications (research fellowships, PhD scholarships). Each applicant must find a supervisor in Switzerland to endorse the proposed research project and write a letter of support. Scholarship applications without an academic supervisor will not be considered. This also applies to graduate schools (doctoral programmes).

    It is the responsibility of each individual scholarship applicant to find a suitable academic supervisor.

    Suitable supervisors: professors and laboratory group leaders. For PhD scholarships, supervisors must be authorized to supervise doctoral theses.

    At universities of applied sciences, a doctorate requires two academic supervisors. One of them must be authorized to confer doctorates at a traditional university.

    BENEFIT:

    Research fellowships, PhD scholarships, and art scholarships: CHF 2,450 per month to cover basic living expenses of one person.
    Please note: This scholarship is not a salary.
    No funding is provided for fieldwork and participation in conferences.

    Additional benefits:

    Health insurance: FCS covers the premiums for compulsory health insurance for scholarship holders from non-EU/EFTA countries. Scholarship holders from EU/EFTA countries must cover these costs themselves.

    One-time grant of CHF 600 for rental deposit.

    Half-Fare Travelcard for public transport

    In addition, the coordinating body organizes excursions and activities for federal scholarship holders.

    Return flight allowance: Scholarship holders from non-EU/EFTA countries receive a return flight allowance (amount determined by country of origin). This allowance may be used up to two months after expiry of the scholarship exclusively for the purpose of returning to the country of origin.

    INFRAVISION CONTEST: OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS

    Answer the call: “Infrastructure as a System”, they invite students to rethink infrastructure for a world shaped by climate pressure, technological disruption, regulatory change and shifting demand. Team up with your friends / peers.

    ELIGIBILITY:

    The contest is open to creative minds from various backgrounds: architecture, urban planning, engineering, complex systems, economics, public policy, computer science, etc. 

    Participants have to showcase their ideas for designing a fictional infrastructure project that is not just efficient today, but resilient, adaptive, and sustainable across uncertain futures.

    The rules are:

    Teams can consist of 1 to 6 members

    There are no specific requirements related to faculty or disciplinary composition. While multidisciplinary teams are encouraged, it is not mandatory

    Team members must have active student status during the academic year 2025-2026

    Each team must send at the address contact@infravision-thinktank.com an email with the following details

    Names, school and department affiliations, degrees studied, and expected graduation dates of all team members

    A concise overview of their project (1-3 sentences are sufficient)

    Contact details (email and phone number of the team’s contact person)

    What is expected from the teams :

    A clear project vision and the value it creates

    2 to 3 plausible future scenarios

    Key risks, vulnerabilities and adaptation levers

    Explicit trade offs between competitiveness, resilience, sustainability and performance

    A system perspective connecting the project to wider ecosystems such as mobility, energy or urban planning

    A realistic implementation roadmap, budget logic and impact indicator

    The submission should go beyond a concept and demonstrate structured thinking:

    Project vision and value creation – Define your infrastructure project, its purpose, the problem it addresses, and the value it creates;

    Future scenarios – Define 2-3 contrasted and plausible future contexts (e.g., macroeconomic tensions, geopolitical uncertainties, regulatory shock, technological disruption);

    Resilience and adaptiveness – Identify key vulnerabilities, risks, and uncertainties. Stress-test and show how your project responds to them (e.g., flexibility, modularity, reversibility);

    Trade-offs – Highlight the main tensions (e.g., cost vs. speed, efficiency vs. resilience, performance vs. sustainability). Make your choices explicit and justify them;

    Bold bets and quick wins – Propose high-impact ideas, either forward-looking or actionable in the short term. This may include disruptive technologies, policy or regulatory changes, or innovative business and financing models;

    Stakeholder engagement – Identify key stakeholders and explain how you will align interests, secure buy-in, and create the right incentives for implementation;

    System perspective – Explain how your project interacts with broader systems (e.g., mobility, energy, urban planning) and its role within a wider ecosystem;
    Implementation roadmap and budget – Translate your vision into a realistic, phased plan. Specify key milestones, enabling conditions, and budgetary requirement;

    Impact assessment – Define the single most important indicator of success. Support your proposal with a high-level cost-benefit perspective and explain what value is created;

    The submission should include a 30-40 slides + a written abstract, along with visual representations, sketches, digital or physical models, etc.

    BENEFIT:

    The competition offers prize money of

    7,000 euros for the 1st-placed team,

    5,000 euros for the 2nd-placed team, and

    3,000 euros for the 3rd-placed team.
