AFRICAN PEACEBUILDING NETWORK: COLLABORATIVE WORKING GROUP RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

The Collaborative Working Group Research Fellowship is an initiative and key complement to the field-based and networking components of the APN’s programming. This fellowship responds to the need for deep collaboration and engagement of researchers and practitioners on peacebuilding challenges in Africa.

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants must be scholars or practitioners based in Africa and the lead investigator must be of the rank of a full professor and based in an African university (and hold a PhD). The competition will be open to joint researcher-practitioner teams (of six members) made up of Africans based at or affiliated with universities; regional organizations; government agencies; or nongovernmental, media, or civil society organizations located in at least three countries on the continent. While the lead investigator must be a professor and have a PhD, other members of the research group may be early- and mid-career scholars, or practitioners, who are expected to hold at least a master’s degree with two or more years of work experience.

BENEFIT:

One APN Collaborative Working Group Research Fellowship will be supported by a maximum award of $60,000 for a period of eighteen months.

BIGSAS-SCHOLARSHIPS FOR AFRICAN WOMEN SCHOLARS BASED ON THE CONTINENT

The Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies, BIGSAS, invites outstanding African women scholars based on the continent to join an international community of early career researchers working in the field of African Studies. BIGSAS provides a centre for creative and innovative doctoral training based on the inter- and multi-disciplinary research environment of the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence at the University of Bayreuth.

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants must have a very good Master’s or equivalent degree. The last Master’s or equivalent degree must have been obtained within the last six years at the time of nomination by BIGSAS. Your application must be accompanied by two reports (letters of recommendation) from academic teachers in your past study programme(s) that know you reasonably well. Please use the DAAD template or make sure that the reports cover the points listed in the DAAD template (https://www2.daad.de/medien/deutschland/stipendien/formulare/recommendation.pdf).

Applicants should not have been resident in Germany for more than fifteen months at the time of nomination. While applications may be submitted in German, English or French, do please note that the working language of BIGSAS is English.

BENEFIT:

In 2024, BIGSAS is awarding two scholarships within the Graduate School Scholarship Programme (GSSP) provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). For these, BIGSAS will nominate candidates who have successfully passed the BIGSAS application procedure. The final selection on the scholarship will be made by the DAAD. The scholarship periods begin in October 2024 at the earliest (including a German language course starting in summer 2024, if applicable). The scholarships are awarded for a total scholarship period of up to four years.
