2026 GROOMING CENTRE UNIVERSITY RESEARCH GRANT SCHEME

The Governing Council and Management of Grooming People for Better Livelihood Centre (Grooming Centre), a leading Microfinance Institution in Nigeria, are pleased to announce the 2025 Grooming Centre University Grant Scheme. The aim of the scheme, which is the seventh in the series, is to catalyze research and knowledge development in the areas of financial inclusion, microfinance, rural development, social enterprise, MSMEs, technological development, digital finance, youth in development, women in development, or any other research that is aimed at lifting people out of poverty.

ELIGIBILITY:

The applicant must either be a student at the undergraduate or postgraduate level in a Nigerian tertiary institution whose research study covers any of such areas as financial inclusion, microfinance, rural development, social enterprise, MSMEs, technological development, digital finance, youth in development, women in development, or any other research that is aimed at lifting people out of poverty.

The focus of the research study must be relevant to the Nigerian context, practical, innovative, and capable of promoting any of the above areas of interest in the Nigerian space.

The research must show a high level of originality and imaginative thought and be data inclusive.

(There are no age, gender, religious, or ethnic barriers to application).

The applicant must be a student at an NUC/ NBTE approved Nigerian university or polytechnic.

The applicant must submit a written and signed recommendation from his/her project supervisor.

The applicant must submit a research concept of between 10-20 pages which will include an Introduction, Statement of the problem, Research Questions, Research Objectives, Significance of the Study, Operationalization of terms, Scope of the Study, Literature and theoretical review, Preamble, Conceptual literature, Empirical literature, Theoretical Orientation, Conceptual framework, Hypotheses, Methodology, Preamble, Research Design, Study area, Study population, Methods of data collection, Sample size and sampling technique, Reliability and Validity test, Methods of Data Analysis, Ethical Consideration, References-APA 6along with candidate’s personal profile.

Applicants’ empirical review must be between the timeframes of 2019 and 2025.

The candidate will also submit a final soft copy of the research project on completion of the study.

Applicants are required to submit their research project in Microsoft Word format, using Times New Roman font, size 12, and 1.5 line spacing.

There are no barriers to age, gender, religion, or ethnicity to the Grooming Centre University Grant Scheme.

The 2026 University Grant will be awarded to 100 undergraduate and 50 postgraduate students who are presently carrying out their research studies in the areas of financial inclusion, microfinance, rural development, social enterprise, MSMEs, technological development, digital finance, youth in development, women in development, or any other research that is aimed at lifting people out of poverty.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY PHD ASSISTANTSHIP – BIGHORN SHEEP POPULATION ECOLOGY AND RESTORATION

The Severud Wildlife Ecology Lab at South Dakota State University (SDSU) is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to study Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep population ecology and restoration in the Greater Badlands ecosystem of South Dakota. The PhD project will focus broadly on the demographic and ecological response of bighorn sheep to population augmentation and recovery. The student will work with GPS/VHF telemetry, population surveys, recruitment monitoring, mortality investigations, GIS data, and existing long-term datasets.

ELIGIBILITY:

Potential research topics include:

Survival and causes of mortality of resident and translocated bighorn sheep

Post-translocation movements, establishment, and integration with resident subherds

Habitat use and factors associated with successful establishment

Reproduction, lamb recruitment, and population growth

Demographic responses to augmentation

Development of monitoring and analytical approaches to inform future augmentation and long-term bighorn sheep management

The project will also include continued disease surveillance and collection of biological samples that may support complementary genetic or other analyses. These activities are important components of the broader restoration program but are not intended to prescribe separate dissertation chapters.

Applicants should have:

An M.S. degree in wildlife ecology, biology, natural resources, or a closely related field by the anticipated start date

Experience conducting wildlife field research

Strong interest in wildlife population ecology, quantitative ecology, and applied conservation

Experience with R and statistical analysis, or demonstrated potential and interest in developing strong quantitative skills

Strong written and oral communication skills

Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a diverse group of project partners

Ability and willingness to conduct fieldwork under challenging conditions

A valid driver’s license

Experience with GPS/VHF telemetry, ungulates, wildlife capture and handling, survival or demographic analysis, GIS/spatial analysis, or population modeling is desirable but not required. Applicants are not expected to have experience in all of these areas.

They are particularly interested in candidates who combine scientific curiosity, quantitative potential, field experience, strong communication skills, and an interest in conducting research that directly informs wildlife conservation and management.

Salary: starting at $26,400 per year

Funding and Timing: The anticipated start date is January 2027. The project is being developed as a four-year PhD research and restoration project, with graduate stipend, tuition support, research expenses, field support, and professional travel incorporated into the funding structure. Final funding and administrative agreements are currently being completed.
