UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY JUDGE RALPH J PERDRIAU POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP IN COMMON LAW

This prestigious stipend scholarship supports research students from the Sydney Law School to conduct research in common law

ELIGIBILITY:

The Scholarship is offered subject to the candidate having an unconditional offer of admission or being currently enrolled to study full-time in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Laws (LLM) by Research within the Sydney Law School.

You must:

have an unconditional offer of admission to study full-time in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Laws (LLM) by Research within the Sydney Law School

be willing to conduct research in common law

hold at least one of the following degrees:

a Bachelor of Laws (Honours First Class) or equivalent, or

 a Master of Laws by Research, or

a Master of Laws by Coursework including a research component equivalent to 25% of one year’s full-time enrolment

a degree in Law together with research and/or professional experience deemed to be equivalent to first class honours.

The scholarship has been established with the aim of attracting top candidates, who have well-developed research projects and who would be competitive at top international institutes of higher learning, to do their research degree at the Sydney Law School. The School may also prioritise candidates whose research aligns with the School’s strategic research priorities.

Preference will be given to commencing candidates, though the Scholarship may exceptionally be awarded to currently enrolled full-time PhD, or LLM by Research students demonstrating progress towards timely thesis completion and exceptional research achievements.

BENEFIT:

This scholarship can be awarded as either a Primary or Supplementary scholarship.

 i. When offered as primary, the Scholarship will provide a primary stipend allowance up to $50,000 per annum as per the below duration:

up to 1.75 years for a successful full-time LLM by Research recipient. No extension is possible.

up to 3 years for a successful full-time PhD recipient with a possible six months extension.

ii. When offered as supplementary (stipend), the Scholarship will provide a supplementary stipend allowance to match a total stipend value (i.e. primary plus supplementary) up to $50,000 per annum as per the below duration:

up to 1.75 years for a successful full-time LLM by Research recipient. No extension is possible.

up to 3 years for a successful full-time PhD recipient with a possible six months extension.

iii. When offered as either primary or supplementary (one-off payment), the Scholarship value will be paid as a one-off payment on receipt of Scholarship Acceptance Form. The value of the scholarship will be mentioned in the offer letter.

COLUMBIA GLOBAL EMERGING SCHOLARS PHD FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The Columbia Global Emerging Scholars Fellowship Program provides opportunities for early-career scholars in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who hold refugee status or have been forcibly displaced. Through the program, year-long fellowships are awarded to support emerging displaced scholars through a Columbia Global Center, where they receive ongoing support to enhance their research capabilities, broaden their professional networks, and advance toward a successful career in academia.

ELIGIBILITY:

Eligible candidates are scholars in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who have been forcibly uprooted from their home countries and respective academic institutions. They could be postdoctoral scholars in the early stages of their careers or Ph.D. candidates who have had their education disrupted. Creative writers, artists, curators, and scholars working on interdisciplinary projects are encouraged to apply.

Must be displaced.

Must have a Ph.D. in the humanities (with rare exceptions, candidates with a non-terminal M.A. or  who were on track to get a PhD may be considered).

Must be based in the region of the Global Center to which they wish to apply (Sub-Saharan Africa for Nairobi; Middle East or North Africa for Amman; Latin America or the Caribbean for Santiago).

Must demonstrate at least an intermediate level of English language proficiency.

Must have received their highest academic degree within the last 12 years. Exceptions to this timeline will be considered to accommodate career-specific trajectories or other circumstances.

While it is preferred that fellows remain in person at the relevant Columbia Global Center for the duration of the fellowship, there is a minimum in-person requirement of six months if it is not feasible for the fellow to remain in person due to immigration, family-related, or other circumstances.

Researchers working on interdisciplinary research projects are welcome to apply.

Fellows are expected to participate in scholarly presentations, workshops, and roundtable discussions. Through the Global Center, they will be connected to a global network of academics and scholars from Columbia University and beyond.
