UTRECHT UNIVERSITY NL MASTER’S SCHOLARSHIP

Application Deadline: 1 February, 2027, 23:59 CET

LOCATION: The Netherlands

The NL Scholarship is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences. The scholarship is intended for international students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA = the EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) who wish to study for a master’s degree in the Netherlands.

ELIGIBILITY:

To be eligible for an NL Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

You must not hold an EU/EEA passport and not be eligible for support under the Dutch study grant and loan system.

You must not be eligible for statutory tuition fees.

You must never have been enrolled at an educational institution in the Netherlands (if you only took part in an exchange programme in the Netherlands, this does not make you ineligible).

You must have applied for an international master’s programme at Utrecht University with a start date of 1 September 2026. Not all programmes participate. Please check the ‘Tuition fees and financial support’ information on the page of the master’s programme you are interested in to see if the NL Scholarship is mentioned as a scholarship opportunity.

Your application will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Academic background as demonstrated in your application for the master’s programme.

Your motivation, which should explain the relevance of your time in the Netherlands and at Utrecht University to your future goals.

The quality and feasibility of your financial plan. You must demonstrate that you can cover the remaining costs by filling out the  Statement of Financial Resources (pdf, 71 kB). Please note: The Statement of Financial Resources allows applicants to demonstrate how they plan to fund their studies at Utrecht University, as scholarships cover only part of the total costs. You may include personal savings or any other funding sources. Applicants are expected to show a realistic financial plan that covers the full nominal duration of the Master’s programme.

This also applies for ETH Bachelor students for a consecutive Master programme.

Please make sure to be reachable under the telephone number specified in your CV as the selection process might include a phone/VC interview in February. If your are not available during that time, please inform the study programme coordinator.

If you are already enrolled in a Master’s degree programme at ETH Zurich, or hold a Master degree, you are not eligible for ESOP.

The pre-proposal for the Master’s thesis must be developed by yourself and use established scientific citation practice.
Plagiarism and negligent or intentional misinformation will lead to exclusion from the admission process or—if discovered later—to the revocation of the admission and of any scholarship.

If your study programme does not ask for references, you must name two reference persons (professors) for your ESOP application. These persons should upload (after an email from the system) a reference letter.

Only ETH Bachelor students may start the ESOP with a leave of absence.

Selection Process: For the start of the academic year 2027/28, there will be approximately 60 ESOP scholarships assigned. The decision is communicated at the end of March.
The applications are evaluated by the Admissions Committees of the respective Master’s programmes. The final decision for awarding scholarships in the Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme rests with the Rector of ETH Zurich. The exact number of annual scholarships depends on the availability of funds. The decisions are communicated by the end of March.

BENEFIT:

The Excellence Scholarship/ESOP consists of a scholarship covering living and study expenses (CHF 12’000 per semester, from HS27 onwards to 13’500 CHF) as well as a tuition fee waiver.

ESOP is awarded for the regular duration of the Master’s programme (three or four semesters). This also applies for the tuition fee waiver.
