CANON FOUNDATION-KYOTO UNIVERSITY JAPAN-AFRICA EXCHANGE PROGRAM

LOCATION: Japan

Based on the Memorandum of Understanding concluded between the Canon Foundation in Europe (CFE) and Kyoto University (KU),  the Canon Foundation-Kyoto University Japan-Africa Exchange Program. The program offers fellowships to highly qualified researchers in fields of research related to African Studies. The program is intended to support 1) fellows from KU who want to do research in Africa, and 2) for scholars from Kyoto University’s partner institutes in Africa who want to do research in Kyoto. 

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants need to be holding at least an MA degree and employed either at KU or KU’s partner institutions as post-doctoral fellows or faculty members at the time of applying. In addition, as long as African applicants can submit one of the two reference letters received from their prospective host from Kyoto University and prove their existing partnerships, they are eligible to apply for the program.

Please submit the following documents to Kyoto University Africa Unit (canon_caas@jambo.africa.kyoto-u.ac.jp):

Your research plan includes a clear title at the top of the page as well as starting/ending dates of the proposed research. The research plan needs to include a general cost estimate, including living, travel, research costs, insurance, and etc. (maximum 2 pages)

2 reference letters (maximum 1 page each) from 2 persons. One letter should be from someone in a position to comment on your academic qualifications and professional work, while the other should be a confirmation letter from your prospective host who can provide research or work facilities to you during the proposed period.

Your Curriculum Vitae

1 copy of your doctoral certificate or your highest academic degree

1 passport size photograph of yourself

publication,1 list of your academic publications or professional achievements in chronological order containing information on all authors, place and year of publication, and page references.

BENEFIT:

The financial support for successful applicants ranges from 22,500 Euro to 27,500 Euro per year and is pro-rated for different periods. CFE will directly administer the payments and notify the detailed payment procedure to each successful applicant.

PEACE SCHOLAR FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

LOCATION: USA

USIP seeks applications from doctoral candidates at U.S. universities with high-quality, policy relevant research that will deepen our understanding of conflict management, peacebuilding, and security issues. Applicants must have completed all required Ph.D. coursework and comprehensive exams and have an approved dissertation research proposal. Priority will be given to applications closely related to the USIP Issue Areas and/or research priorities of the Minerva Research Initiative:

Special consideration will be given to proposed research in the following areas*:

Reducing violence and addressing other factors, including organized crime, that destabilize communities and fuel migration from Central and South America, the Caribbean, and other regions.

Promoting democratic transitions and counteracting violent extremism in strategic regions, including West Africa, the Sahel, and East Africa.

De-escalating tensions in the areas of the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and the Indo-Pacific where deterrence mechanisms are underdeveloped, under stress, or breaking down.

Countering the tactics used by U.S. adversaries to incite conflict and undermine U.S. influence in countries of strategic importance.

ELIGIBILITY:

Applications will be selected based on the strength of the proposed research and its potential to make original contributions to the field. Applications that do not address a topic listed above or draw a clear connection to either the USIP or Minerva mission will not be considered.

Applicants must prepare and submit an online application. USIP will not provide status updates on submitted applications.

Peace Scholars are required to participate in an annual workshop, in-person in Washington, D.C. in Fall 2025. The Peace Scholar is required to submit a copy of their completed and committee approved dissertation to USIP at PeaceScholarFellows@usip.org.

BENEFIT:

USIP funds up to 18 Peace Scholars for a 10-month, non-residential fellowship. Peace Scholars receive stipends of up to $20,000 paid directly to the individual in three tranches. Peace Scholar awards may not be deferred.
