LUCE/ACLS DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIPS IN AMERICAN ART

ACLS invites applications for Luce/ACLS Dissertation Fellowships in American Art, which support graduate students pursuing research on the history of art and visual culture of the United States, including all aspects of Native American art, and who are at any stage of PhD dissertation research or writing. 

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants must:

be a doctoral student at a university in the United States in art history or a related field, such as Native American and Indigenous studies, ethnic studies, or African American studies. (Students preparing theses for the Master of Fine Arts degree are not eligible.)

have a dissertation focused on a topic in the history of the visual arts of the United States, including all facets of Native American art. Projects should be focused foremost on the art object and/or image and employ an art-historical or visual studies approach.

have completed all requirements for the PhD except the dissertation before beginning fellowship tenure.

have not previously applied for this fellowship more than once.

be a US citizen, permanent resident, Indigenous person residing in the United States through rights associated with the Jay Treaty of 1794, DACA recipient, asylee, refugee, or individual granted Temporary Protected Status in the United States.

BENEFIT:

The total award of $42,000 includes a stipend and additional funds for travel and research. This program is made possible by the generous support of the Henry Luce Foundation.

THE AFRICA INSTITUTE SENIOR AND POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS PROGRAM

Application Deadline: Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

LOCATION: United Arab Emirates

The fellowship is open to emerging scholars in the field of social sciences with specific emphasis on gender, feminism, and cultural studies and visual cultures, as long as they intersect with African and African diaspora studies. Eligible applicants must have earned their doctoral degree (Ph.D.) within the last five years, prior to assuming the fellowship. This is a full-time two year residency based in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates starting from Fall September 2025 to Summer June 2027.

ELIGIBILITY:

The Senior Fellowships are open to scholars who are at the associate professor or full professor levels, or their equivalents within or outside the academy.

The applicant for the Post-doctoral Fellowships must hold a Ph.D. awarded within the last five years.

Deadlines and Key Dates

The application deadline is Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

The Senior fellowships are a full-time one-year residency based in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates starting from Fall September 2025 to Summer June 2026.

The Post-doctoral fellowships are a full-time two-year residency based in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates starting from Fall September 2025 to Summer June 2027.

Awarded fellows are scheduled to arrive in mid-August 2025 to organize and finalize residency and housing arrangements.

BENEFIT:

The Institute Research Fellowships Program provides the opportunity for both junior and senior scholars of African and African diaspora studies to focus on a research project and participate in ongoing scholarly and intellectual activities during their term at the Institute. The residency also grants fellows the opportunity to interact with scholars and academics in their area of research.
