THE RYOICHI SASAKAWA YOUNG LEADERS FELLOWSHIP FUND (SYLFF) SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (SYLFF) has been established at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University thanks to the kindness of The Tokyo Foundation for Policy Research’s Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (SYLFF). The scholarship aims to cultivate future leaders who will be active both domestically and internationally. Every year, one student from each graduate school will be nominated for the scholarship. The Sylff program aims to identify and nurture leaders who will overcome differences in nationality, language, ethnicity, religion, and political systems to tackle global issues and whose high integrity and drive to address issues unique to their respective countries can make a real difference.

ELIGIBILITY:

Demonstrate a clear commitment to the following:

Take a cross-disciplinary approach to tackle global issues and overcome differences of nationality, language, religion, and political systems.

Propose research content that is consistent with the basic theme of “Issues and Opportunities Facing the Asia-Pacific Region: Rapid Transformation amid Accelerating Globalization.”

Conduct research that is for the benefit of the general public and contributes to social development, freedom, peace, humanity, and international mutual understanding.

Have a strong sense of initiative towards their chosen issue or problem, and have the determination and potential to take a leading role on the domestic and/or international stage

Not currently be receiving, nor be recommended for, any external scholarships.

Please note that APU Tuition Reduction Scholarships are not considered external scholarships. Recipients of this scholarship will not be eligible to receive the Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship (JASSO) or any other external scholarship with a monthly stipend exceeding 48,000 JPY.

Application and Selection Process

The Sylff Scholarship only accepts applications for September enrollment. Therefore, please indicate your request to be considered as a Sylff Scholarship candidate in the APU Online Application System and submit your application by March 19, 2027.

APU reviews application documents and selects eligible candidates.

Final results will be announced by APU in June 2027. Recipients will be notified via email.

There may be changes to the scholarship conditions. Please be sure to check the details on the scholarship organization’s website.

BENEFIT:

1,500,000 JPY (125,000 JPY/month)

Payment is 125,000 per month from October 2026 to September 2027 and is to be canceled if the recipient takes a leave of absence or loses their enrollment status at APU (due to withdrawal, expulsion, etc.).

KOCHI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FOR DOCTORAL INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, 2027

LOCATION: Japan

The Kochi University of Technology (KUT) extends their application for qualified international doctoral students to apply for the Special Scholarship Program (SSP) on research projects in the field of Engineering. Every year in April and October, the university enrolls selected doctoral students for specific research projects. The students pursue the doctoral course in English (excl. Japanese students) while at the same time assisting their host professor as a research assistant (RA). Through this program, KUT wishes to expand and deepen international ties with academic and educational institutions all over the world.

ELIGIBILITY:

To have permission from the preferred SSP supervisor to apply

To hold a degree from an accredited institution comparable to the master’s degree offered at KUT after 18 years of education, or to be scheduled to acquire such a degree before the KUT enrollment date

To be 35 years old or under at the time of enrollment, in principle

To have an excellent academic record and strong bachelor’s and master’s degrees from reputable universities

To have the intention, adequate knowledge and research skill to study in the research field

To have high English proficiency（a minimum score of TOEFL iBT72 (Writing 17), IELTS 5.5 (Writing 5.5), CET-6 or WSK(PETS-5) . Applicants may not be required to submit English test score if they meet certain conditions.

The applicants are encouraged to send a pre-application request to their preferred supervisors at least 8 weeks prior to the formal application deadline. (Please find the application deadline in item 11 “Admission Sechedule” on this page. Only individuals who have obtained the permission of their preferred supervisors are eligible to formally apply to the SSP program.

BENEFIT:

Exemption from 15,000 yen entrance examination fee, 300,000 yen enrollment fee and 535,800 yen/year tuition fee for three years

To support living expenses, 150,000 yen/month is paid as scholarship for three years

150,000 yen is provided for travel and initial living costs. (given only to international applicants who are living outside Japan, and who have, or have the intention to acquire, “Student” status of Japanese residence at the time of entry into Japan)
