EPSRC CDT IN DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION OF METALS INDUSTRY (DIGITALMETAL CDT) PHD SCHOLARSHIP

DigitalMetal CDT, led by the University of Leicester, in partnership with Universities of Birmingham, Loughborough, Nottingham, and Warwick, invites applications for about 14 fully funded PhD positions for 2025 entry. This programme is designed to train future leaders equipped with combined expertise in metals and alloy engineering and digital technology and AI, supported by a broad foundation in manufacturing management, product development, leadership, and personal development skills.

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants must have or expect to obtain a first class or upper second class BSc and/or M-level degree (or an equivalent overseas qualification) in a relevant subject.

Applicants who hold a lower second class honours degree (or an equivalent overseas qualification) in a relevant subject may be considered for admission provided that they also hold a Masters degree in a relevant subject.

University of Leicester English language requirements apply as necessary.

Project-based studentships are open to all applicants* who meet the academic requirements (at least a 2:1 at UK BSc level or at least a pass at UK MSc level or overseas equivalent).

*Applicants from outside the UK should check their eligibility with the project’s lead supervisor. Not all of our projects are accepting international applicants.

International students will normally require a student visa in order to be able to study in the UK. There are costs associated with the visa application process, which must be met by the student; approximately £2,500 for the visa and healthcare surcharge. Please ensure you have the means to meet these costs before you apply to the programme.

EU applicants who hold EU settled or EU pre-settled status please provide PGR Admissions with a share code (the one that starts with S) so we can verify your fee status email to pgradmissions@le.ac.uk.

BENEFIT:

CDT in DigitalMetal studentships are for 4 years and are funded by EPSRC and provide:

Tuition fees at UK (Home) rates*

Annual stipend, (UKRI rate, currently set at £19,237 per year for 2024/25)

£4,000 Research training support grant (RTSG) per year

*If you are not eligible for UK fees then you may need to confirm whether the host institution will provide the difference between UK and International fees for the duration of your studies. Please query this with the project lead as appropriate.

NCCR AUTOMATION FELLOWSHIP (FUNDED)

Application Deadline: 30th June 2025 at 17.00 (CET).

LOCATION: Switzerland

NCCR welcomes motivated students from abroad to conduct their Master’s thesis or research project with the institution. The 2025 call for applications is now open, with a deadline of 30.06.2025 at 17.00 (CET). Winners will be notified in October. 

ELIGIBILITY:

The fellowship is available to Master’s students, PhD candidates or postdoctoral researchers who fulfil the following criteria: 

You are currently engaged with an education or research programme that complements the research group that you are applying to work with.

You remain enrolled or employed at your home institution until the end of the fellowship.

For PhD students and postdoctoral researchers: You will continue to receive your salary from your home institution.

You have not studied or worked at the institution which will host you in Switzerland in the past. 

You meet the requirements of the host institution. Find links in the FAQ.

Deliverables: Research report; Financial report;

Any resulting publications must include mention of the fellowship: “This work was supported by NCCR Automation, grant agreement 51NF40_180545 from the Swiss National Science Foundation.”

Motivation letter for Master’s student (max. 2 pages);

Research proposal for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers (covering your research question and how you intend to go about answering the question or contribute to answering it, with an accompanying plan and/or timeline max. 2 pages);

Letter of support from home institution and supervisor;

Copy of university degree(s) and/or transcripts;

Candidates must choose up to three research topics and three principal investigators (PIs) within the NCCR Automation to act as host in case of a successful application. A list of PIs can be found on the application form or on the people page of this website or on FAQ page.  

Candidates should specify any sort of income from the home institution or from any other sources during the period of the fellowship, if any. 

BENEFIT:

Duration: max. 6 months, to be concluded no later than 31.07.2026. 

Budget: Fellows will receive a contribution to the increased costs of living in Switzerland during the period of the visit. The amount will be calculated based on the estimated study and living costs for international students by ETHZ and considering individual needs and additional sources of income, if applicable. 

The PI supervising the student will cover project-related expenses, such as travel costs to NCCR Automation meetings.

Applicants must declare any scholarships they benefit from during their research stay with them.
