THE MACHEL-MANDELA INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME

The Brenthurst Foundation is inviting applications from young graduates for the Machel-Mandela Internship Programme, named in honour of former South African President Nelson Mandela and his wife Graca Machel. The Machel-Mandela Internship programme offers an opportunity for a graduate to participate in the work of one of Africa’s leading think tanks, including participating in the organisation of events, the writing of papers and op-eds and other policy work.

ELIGIBILITY:

Under 30 years of age

A Masters level degree

Excellent spoken and written English. African and other languages would be an asset.

Excellent communication skills

Enthusiastic and reliable, a self-starter who requires minimal oversight and management

Able to balance deadlines and attention to detail

Fluency in all basic IT skills

Copy-editing and proof-reading skills an asset

The intern may be from South Africa or farther afield

A passion for Africa and a keen interest in new thinking and strategies to strengthen Africa’s economic performance.

Broad knowledge of African politics and economics

BENEFIT:

An all-inclusive stipend per month and accommodation, if required (subject to Foundation policy), will be provided. Other work–related expenses may also be covered subject to agreement with the Foundation.

The internship will be available full-time for a minimum of six months and the selected candidate will be expected to take up the appointment by 1 February 2025.

WITS-TUB-UNILAG URBAN LAB MASTER SCHOLARSHIPS

The WITS-TUB-UNILAG Programme is offering Masters Scholarships for studies at the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of the Witwatersrand! Calls for both South African Citizens and Sub-Saharan Citizens!

ELIGIBILITY:

The program is interdisciplinary, but we place a special emphasis on a portfolio that is inter-transdisciplinary, cutting across the fields of development planning, housing, sustainable urban development, urban management, and urban design. Candidates in architecture and urban planning as well as in the humanities, cultural studies, urban geography, or social sciences with a focus on urban studies and planning as well as candidates in related fields such as landscape architecture are also welcome to apply.

Citizens from sub-Saharan African countries other than South Africa are legible to apply

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree that is equivalent to a honours degree (NQF level 8) in the South African Qualification System (SAQA). There is no need to apply for SAQA if your bachelor’s degree was obtained in a South African university.

There is no age limit applying to the scholarships for study purposes. However, at the time of the application, no more than 6 years should have passed since an applicant graduated from his/ her previous studies.

Award of the scholarships is based on a combination of merit, distribution across the continent and, gender balance.

Study into the MUS programme is on a full-time basis for 11 months. Selected students will not participate in any form of employment during this period

BENEFIT:

The master’s scholarship covers the duration of one academic year. The scholarship includes:
Full tuition fee
Monthly stipend covering living expenses
Travel from home country/place of origin
Student medical aid (12 months)
