The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) is the international research college of the University of Freiburg. For the academic year 2027/28, FRIAS is offering individual Early Career Fellowships to researchers from any nationality and discipline based in Freiburg, Germany and abroad.

ELIGIBILITY:

Fellowships are available to researchers from any nationality based in Freiburg, Germany, and abroad.

Fellowships can last for 4 to 10 months between 1 September 2027 and 31 August 2028.

Depending on their circumstances, selected applicants will either receive a fellowship contract with the University of Freiburg or alternative compensation (for details see “Financial Aspects” in the application manual).

Fellowships will allow researchers to conduct their own research projects. Since one of the aims of FRIAS is to foster cross-disciplinary communication, full-time presence at FRIAS is mandatory. Fieldwork conducted outside Freiburg cannot be funded during the fellowship period.

Criteria:

Applicants must hold a completed doctoral degree plus a maximum of eight years of post-doctoral experience.

Applicants must have had 4 peer-reviewed publications since 1 January 2022.

Applicants must have at least six months’ research or study experience at academic institution(s) in a country different from the country of their first academic degree by the time of application.

Fellowships will be awarded to individuals with challenging and innovative research projects of top academic quality through a highly competitive, strictly merit-based selection process (expected success rate: ~5% of eligible applications).

Applications are welcome from any discipline that can be supported at the University of Freiburg. FRIAS encourages applicants to learn more about the University of Freiburg’s  research strengths and areas of focus.

Letter of support (PDF): identifying a host laboratory in Freiburg where the research project can be carried out; only applicable to experimental scientists

Experiment sketch and timetable (PDF): only applicable to experimental scientists, who are required to submit a sketch and timetable of the experiments they wish to conduct in Freiburg

ECOWAS YOUNG GRADUATE IMMERSION PROGRAMME (YGP) 2027 COHORT

In response to this challenge of the issue of labour market integration, ECOWAS has put in place the ECOWAS Nnamdi Azikiwe Academic Mobility Programme (ENAAMS Programme), one component of which is the professional immersion programme within its institutions and agencies, with the aim of offering young graduates from across the region a practical opportunity to enhance their professional skills and employability. Join the elite of young African professionals and help shape the future of regional integration in West Africa.

ELIGIBILITY:

The 2027 cohort of the immersion programme is open to recent graduates from ECOWAS Member States (Benin, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, GuineaBissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo) aged between eighteen (18) and thirty-two (32) years (18 to 32 years).

The official languages of ECOWAS are French, English and Portuguese. Applicants to the programme must be proficient in at least one of these languages.

The applicant must:

Be a national of an ECOWAS Member State (Benin, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo);

Be aged between 18 and 32 on the closing date;

A Bachelor’s degree holder, a Master’s degree holder, a PhD holder, or an equivalent qualification.

Application Procedures (How to Apply): Applications must be submitted exclusively via the programme’s official platform.

Each applicant may apply for a maximum of two (02) positions.

Only one cover letter is required for applications.

Ninety (90) posts have been allocated for the year 2027. The process is based on the principles of merit, fairness, transparency, and equal opportunities. It includes the following stages:

Online submission of applications via the programme’s dedicated platform;

Assessment of applications by a selection committee set up by the ECOWAS Commission;

Institutional approval of the selected candidates;

Notification to successful candidates.

BENEFIT:

Any selected applicant who leaves their country of origin to take up a post in another country is considered to be on secondment (in mobility). In this case, a flight ticket is issued to them from their country of origin to the country where the host institution is located.
