UNIVERSITY OF GENEVA EXCELLENCE MASTER FELLOWSHIPS

The Faculty of Science of the University of Geneva, with the support of external partners, has established an Excellence Fellowship program open to outstanding and highly motivated students who wish to pursue a Master of Science degree in one of the disciplines covered by the Faculty. Candidate selection is based on excellence. 

ELIGIBILITY:

Regardless of your home university, whether you have passed or are doing a brilliant bachelor’s degree, and that you are one of the best in your year2, this program is for you! You must meet the admission criteria of the Master of your choice3 and be selected on the basis of the application file for an Excellence Fellowship.

For the application to be considered, each student has to fulfill the enrollment procedure as described on the Admissions office website.

if you are a student at the UNIGE: a scan of your UNIGE card

if you are not yet a student at the UNIGE, the mail entitled “UNIGE-Candidature: Dépôt de votre dossier” that you received after registering for the master’s program (proof that you have begun the registration process) is required.

The application (in English or French) must include the following documents in the form of a SINGLE pdf file:

A scan of your national identity card or passport.

A Curriculum Vitae (2 pages maximum).

The transcript of exams passed during the bachelor’s education, with all grades.

A motivation letter in which you describe your specific scientific interests and your motivation to pursue a Master of Science program at the University of Geneva.

Letters of reference from two professors attesting to your aptitude for this program.

Any other pertinent information, like results of the GRE (General requirement examination), of TOEFL or other language tests.

The application is made online, from the beginning of January of each year. After registering, you will receive an e-mail containing a personal link allowing you to fill out the application form.

Next application deadline is 28 February, 2026 (for Masters starting September 14, 2026).

BENEFIT:

The Excellence Fellowship consists of a grant amounting to CHF 10’000 to CHF 15’000/year (no teaching duties); it is awarded for one year and extended for the regular duration of the chosen Master’s program (three or four semesters) provided the applicant is academically successful at the end of his/her first semester of studies.

BOREL GLOBAL FELLOWS PROGRAM AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY’S COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND LIFE SCIENCES.

The Borel Global Fellows Program supports students committed to enhancing African food security, agricultural development, and/or poverty alleviation to pursue graduate studies at Iowa State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The program seeks to help eradicate food and nutrition insecurity while promoting wealth and health for subsistence farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa by educating scientists at Iowa State University who will become knowledge leaders that reside and work in Sub-Saharan Africa.

ELIGIBILITY:

All faculty members with a majority appointment in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University may submit an application for partial graduate student funding. To be considered for the Borel Global Fellows Program, the student must:

be admitted into a graduate program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

commit to completing graduate studies as a means for preparation of a career contributing to food security in Sub-Saharan Africa

complete the majority of their graduate research in Sub-Saharan Africa

demonstrate an intention to work and live in Sub-Saharan Africa after completing their graduate studies

A completed application will include a cover letter from the major professor, a CV of the student, and a copy of the student’s goal statement. Due date each year: January 15. Cover letters will address the commitment of the major professor to provide the remaining required funding (typically tuition, fees and research costs) and his/her commitment to support the student’s research in Sub-Saharan Africa. Applications are not accepted directly from graduate students. Applications may only be submitted by Iowa State University professors to request support for graduate students who have already been accepted into a graduate program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. 

Iowa State University faculty interested in submitting an application can contact the Office for Global Engagement staff. 

BENEFIT:

Up to $25,000 per year per student of funding is available to support graduate student stipends (or a combination of a partial stipend and research funding) for up to 30 months for MS students and up to 42 months for PhD students. Funding for travel by the student to and from Africa for research purposes also is available.
