KELLOGG INSTITUTE POSTDOCTORAL VISITING FELLOWSHIPS PROGRAM

The Kellogg Institute Postdoctoral Visiting Fellowships are awarded to newly minted PhDs who conduct research on global democracy. As members of the Institute’s vibrant Visiting Fellows cohort, Postdoctoral Fellows benefit from dedicated time and resources to advance their own research agendas, engage in scholarly development, and collaborate with distinguished faculty, scholars, and practitioners from the US and abroad.

ELIGIBILITY:

They invite applications from scholars conducting international research on themes related to global democracy. Applicants may come from any country and must have earned a PhD no more than three years prior to the start of the fellowship. (Please note: graduates of the University of Notre Dame PhD programs are not eligible to apply.)

The most competitive applicants will hold a PhD or equivalent degree in a social science discipline. In exceptional cases, the Institute will consider applicants with a PhD in other disciplines.

Eligibility Considerations (for non-US citizens/residents): For non-US citizens/residents, please consider the following: 

Advanced English language proficiency is required.

Foreign nationals must have a valid passport and obtain a J-1 visa.

According to US immigration regulations, an individual who completes a period of stay of less than five years as a J-1 professor or research scholar and does not have another appointment immediately following the completion of said stay cannot return to the US in the J-1 Professor or J-1 Research Scholar category until the individual has been outside the US for a minimum period of 24 months. This 24-month bar is different from the two-year home residency requirement some scholars are subject to.

Kellogg Institute fellowship applications are submitted through our online system in Interfolio.

A complete application will consist of a Visiting Fellowship Application Form and Institutional Required Information Form (IRIF) and the following documents uploaded through the online application system:

Cover letter addressing your interest in the fellowship and specifying your preferred term of stay

Curriculum vitae

A research project statement (6–10 double-spaced pages)

Project Abstract (150 words max)

Short Bio (200-300 words)

A writing sample—This could be a chapter of the dissertation or an unpublished or forthcoming article (maximum 30 pages, excluding endnotes, bibliography, or illustrations).

Three Confidential Letters of Recommendation – Letters must be received into the Interfolio system no later than Wednesday, October 7

Competition for A/Y 2027-28 – Applications open August 1, 2026, to October 1, 2026

BENEFIT:

Postdoctoral Visiting Fellowships offer a competitive total compensation package that includes the following:

An annual stipend of $75k

Up to $2K in approved relocation expenses

CAMBRIDGE ERA: AI FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Applications are now open for the Cambridge ERA:AI Fellowship. This is a 10-week research program hosted in Cambridge, UK, with their winter fellowship starting on 18th January, 2027. The first stage of the application process primarily consists of short essay questions (and should take you about 2 hours).

ELIGIBILITY:

Anyone! They are a talent-first programme and care about much more than just credentials. In fact, they are excited to support fellows from a wide range of subject areas who are committed to their mission. There are no formal eligibility restrictions beyond being 18 or older.

The Cambridge ERA:AI Fellowship is especially (though not exclusively) valuable for:

Researchers at any career stage looking to apply their expertise to high-priority questions in AI safety or governance, explore a new research direction, or work across disciplinary boundaries;

Professionals from technical, policy, security, legal, economic or other relevant fields who want to bring their existing expertise to frontier AI safety and governance;

People seeking to deepen or redirect an existing research agenda towards problems arising from increasingly capable AI systems; and

People with distinctive domain expertise or perspectives that could improve how we understand and address risks from advanced AI.

BENEFIT:

Full funding: Fellows receive a stipend of £10,000. On top of this, their fellows receive visa support, meal provisions during working hours, and travel expense coverage.

Expert mentorship: Fellows will work closely with a mentor on their research agenda for the fellowship. See our Mentors page to learn about previous mentors (but note that ERA mentors differ for each cohort as we match fellows with mentors once they are accepted).

Research Support: Many of their alumni have gone on to publish their research in top journals and conferences such as NeurIPS. They provide dedicated research management support to help their fellows become strong researchers / policymakers in the field.

Community: Fellows are immersed in a learning environment. They will have a dedicated desk space at their office in Cambridge and participate in regular social events and community activities throughout the fellowship.

Networking and learning opportunities: They assist fellows in developing the necessary skills, expertise, and networks to thrive in an AI safety or policy career. They can facilitate introductions to many organizations in the field. In special cases, they also provide extra financial assistance to support impactful career transitions.

Significant extensions available: They offer 6mo+ full-time, funded positions to their top fellows at ERA to continue their research beyond the 10-week fellowship via their Research Scholars programme.
