From 2026/27, the CSC has launched a new ‘Commonwealth Fellowship Programme’ featuring two strands: the current Professional Fellowships alongside a new strand of Academic Fellowships.

Commonwealth Professional Fellowships are for mid-career professionals from eligible Commonwealth countries (other than the UK) to undertake a programme of professional development at a UK host organization working in their sector.

Commonwealth Academic Fellowships are for academic staff who hold a PhD and are employed at a university in an eligible Commonwealth country (other than the UK) to undertake a programme of academic skills update, knowledge exchange, and networking, with a view to establishing future collaboration at a UK university.

Both strands are open to candidates from  ALL Commonwealth countries.

To be eligible for these fellowships, prospective fellows must:

Professional Fellows: have at least five years’ full-time, or equivalent part-time, relevant work experience in a profession related to the subject of the fellowship program by the proposed start of the fellowship—voluntary work experience will not be counted towards this minimum.

Academic Fellows: Hold a PhD and be employed by a university in a Commonwealth country other than the UK.

In addition to the above, prospective Fellows must ensure they meet any eligibility criteria set out by each individual host organization.

For further information on the support available to Fellows with a disability, see the CSC disability support statement.

These checks will be carried out before proceeding with any type of formal agreement or contractual relationship. In most cases, the due diligence checks will be straightforward, but further information may be requested, so we ask for full cooperation from candidates to speed up the process.

If candidates do not agree to their personal data being used for the purpose of conducting due diligence, the CSC will not be able to proceed further with the selection process.

THE DOROTHY AND LEWIS B. CULLMAN CENTER FOR SCHOLARS AND WRITERS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Application Deadline: Friday, September 25, 2026, 5pm EDT.

LOCATION: USA

The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers is an international fellowship program open to people whose work will benefit directly from access to the collections at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building—including academics, independent scholars, and creative writers (novelists, playwrights, and poets).

ELIGIBILITY:

The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers offers fellowships to people whose work will benefit directly from access to the research collections at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. Renowned for the extraordinary comprehensiveness of its collections, the Library is one of the world’s preeminent resources for study in anthropology, art, geography, history, languages and literature, philosophy, politics, popular culture, psychology, religion, sociology, sports, and urban studies.

The Cullman Center’s Selection Committee awards fifteen fellowships a year to outstanding scholars and writers—academics, independent scholars, journalists, creative writers (novelists, playwrights, and poets), translators, and visual artists.

Foreign nationals conversant in English are welcome to apply.

Candidates for the fellowship will need to work primarily at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building rather than at other divisions of the library. People seeking funding for research leading directly to a degree are not eligible.

The Cullman Center looks for top-quality writing. It aims to promote dynamic communication about literature and scholarship at the very highest level—within the center, in public forums throughout the library, and in the fellows’ published work.

The Library expects Fellows to work at the Cullman Center five days a week, Monday through Friday, for the duration of the Fellowship term, which runs from September through May. Each Fellow gives a talk over lunch on his or her current work-in-progress to the other Fellows and to a wide range of invited guests and may be asked to take part in other programs at The New York Public Library.

Visual artists at work on a book project are also welcome to apply.
