The university will offer PhD scholarships for students starting their PhD research at the university in the 2027-2028 academic session. In order to attract the best and brightest PhD students, the university seeks to offer not only unparalleled research facilities and superb supervision but also development opportunities that will support our research students as they progress beyond their PhD through an exciting scholarship scheme.

ELIGIBILITY:

The awards are open to UK and overseas students applying to start their first year of study for an on-campus research degree in 2027-2028.

Applicants must have already applied for admission to a first year of full-time or part-time on-campus or distance PhD study at the university. We encourage applicants who wish to apply for this scholarship to make contact with their academic school regarding any admission deadlines.

Please check the entry requirements for your proposed programme of study for details of other acceptable English language qualifications. 

You may apply for the scholarship prior to obtaining the necessary English language test results, but the results should be uploaded as soon as possible.

These awards cannot be held concurrently with fully-funded scholarships but can be held with partially-funded scholarships and will be reduced pro-rata.

Applicants must be of outstanding academic merit and research potential. Candidates must have, or expect to obtain, a UK first-class or 2:1 honours degree at the undergraduate level or the international equivalent.

Other factors such as financial status, nationality, and the proposed field of study are not taken into account.

The university will not generally consider candidates who have already obtained a PhD or formal equivalent as a result of direct research training.

BENEFIT:

Each scholarship covers the university tuition fee as well as a stipend equivalent to the UKRI stipend rate (for 2026-2027 this is currently £21,805), subject to satisfactory progress. The scholarships are awarded for between three and four years as agreed by the school/college (or pro rata for part-time).

NVIDIA GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP

LOCATION: Multiple Regions

The NVIDIA Graduate Fellowship Program provides up to $60,000 per award for PhD research that advances accelerated computing. Fellows work with NVIDIA researchers and complete a required in-person summer internship before the award year.

ELIGIBILITY:

PhD experience: Complete your first year of PhD-level studies before applying. See the FAQ for guidance on exceptional cases.

Field of study: Major in computer science, computer engineering, system architecture, electrical engineering, or a related area.

Active research: Be actively engaged in research as part of your PhD thesis.

Full-time enrollment: Remain a full-time, active PhD student throughout the nine-month award year. Do not plan to graduate before the end of that academic year.

In-person internship: Be available for a summer internship at an eligible NVIDIA research office before the Fellowship year begins.

Participation restrictions: Full-time NVIDIA employees and immediate family members of NVIDIA employees cannot participate.

University administration: Your university must administer the award. Payment goes to the university, not directly to you.

Internship locations: United States, Canada, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Israel, Taiwan, and Singapore. International PhD students are eligible to apply.

To apply:

Prepare these four required items. Manage your application and recommendation letters in the submission portal.

Research proposal: Up to 2 pages, plus a bibliography. The bibliography does not count toward the limit. Include your name at the top; text and images must fit within 2 pages.

Resume or CV: Include your contact information.

2–3 recommendation letters: At least 2 letters, including one from your thesis advisor/professor; no more than 3. Other letters may come from non-professors.

Internship availability: Confirm that you can complete the required in-person summer internship.

Research funding of up to $60,000 per award, administered through your university for stipends, tuition, and mandatory fees.
