WORLD BANK GROUP AFRICA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

LOCATION: Multiple Regions

The program targets young talented African nationals who are completing or have recently completed their Ph.D. in an area relevant to the World Bank’s work. The fellowship program has been very successful since its inception, building a strong pipeline of young African talent interested in a career in development, in international institutions, African governments, think tanks, and academia.

ELIGIBILITY:

Be a recent Ph.D. graduate (within three years of completion) or be enrolled in the last year of the Ph.D. program.

Have an excellent command of English, both written and verbal. 

Possess strong quantitative and analytical skills. 

Be under the age of 32 by the closing of the application period.

BENEFIT:

Fellows are eligible to receive consultant fees and round-trip economy class air travel to Washington, D.C. or a WBG country office from their university or institution.

The program offers selected fellows a six-month assignment at WBG offices in Washington D.C. or in country offices to gain hands-on experience in WBG operations. This includes knowledge generation and dissemination, design of global and country policies, and the building of institutions to achieve inclusive growth in developing countries. While benefitting from research and innovation in multiple sectors, fellows will also work on research, economic policy, technical assistance, and lending operations that contribute to the World Bank’s goals of eliminating poverty and increasing shared prosperity.

IEG FELLOWSHIPS FOR DOCTORAL STUDENTS

Application Deadline: August 15, 2024

LOCATION: Germany

These are open to PhD students from Germany and abroad who have at least a Masters level degree in history, theology or another discipline which works historically. 

ELIGIBILITY:

They must have been pursuing their doctorate for no more than three years at the time of the application deadline, substantiated exceptions to this rule are possible. As a research institution that is not part of a university, the Institute does not hold any examinations and does not award any academic qualifications. Dissertations are completed under the supervision of the fellowship holder’s supervisor at their home university.

the completed application form

curriculum vitae and a list of publications (if applicable) (please do not send photographs)

an outline of the Ph.D.-thesis (up to 15,000 characters excluding footnotes and spaces)

the structure of the Ph.D.-thesis

a detailed timetable for the intended stay at the Institute

copies of university transcripts and proof of language competence

You may write in either English or German; we recommend that you use the language in which you are most proficient. Proficiency in English is required.

BENEFIT:

IEG Fellowship for doctoral students have a monthly value of € 1,350.

Fellowship holders whose partners accompany them to Mainz and do not have an income of more than 450 euros per month may receive a family allowance. Please indicate in your application whether your partner accompanies you to Mainz.  

Fellows who come to Mainz accompanied by their underage children can apply for child allowance.
