GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS (GUIPRS)

Griffith University awards Griffith University International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (GUIPRS) via a competitive application process to candidates commencing or enrolled in a Higher Degree Research (HDR) program.

ELIGIBILITY:

To be eligible for a GUIPRS, an applicant must:

Not be a domestic student, as defined as being a student who is an Australian citizen; or an Australian permanent resident or holder of an Australian Permanent Humanitarian visa; or a New Zealand citizen.

Be commencing or enrolled in a HDR program (for which GUIPRS support is available) at Griffith University.

Applicants are ranked and selected on the basis of Griffith University’s selection criteria; addressing academic merit, research potential and the quality of the research training environment in which their research project will be undertaken, taking into account the University’s strategic priorities. The selection process and criteria are as set out in Sections 3.1 and 3.2 of the HDR Scholarship Procedure.

Commencement of study: Awardees must accept both a place in the HDR program (if not already commenced) as well as the GUIPRS by the date specified in the offer letter and must commence their scholarship by the commencement date specified in this letter. Awardees may apply for a deferred commencement to a future date where a provision to defer the scholarship is provided in the letter of offer. Awardees are normally expected to commence within the year of award. Full details of the reasons for the request will be required. If an awardee cannot commence by the approved date as outlined in the letter of offer, or where a deferral request is not approved, the award will be withdrawn.

Enrollment: Awardees are required to maintain an on-campus enrollment.

Study load: Awardees are required to maintain a full-time study load, unless Griffith University has approved part-time study load and scholarship award in accordance with section 3.8 of the HDR Scholarship Procedure. Part-time scholarships will have tax withheld in accordance with the relevant tax legislation. The University may require part-time scholarship recipients to convert to full-time if the reasons for which the part-time award was granted no longer apply.

A full-time study load commitment is at least the equivalent of the standard five day working week (e.g. 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, 48 weeks per year). The actual pattern of research and study is to be negotiated by the candidate and their supervisory team. Refer to Section 3.5 of the HDR Enrolment and Variations to Candidature Procedure.

Duration: The maximum duration of a full-time GUIPRS is:

2 years (full-time equivalent) in a masters (research) or the MPhil program

3 years (full-time equivalent) in a doctoral program.

Continuation of receipt of the GUIPRS throughout this duration is dependent upon evidence of the awardee’s satisfactory progress in the HDR program, through the timely completion of candidature milestones and satisfactory progress reports.

The Scholarship duration will be reduced by any period of study undertaken:

Towards the research project and/or degree prior to the commencement of the GUIPRS; or

Towards the degree during suspension of the GUIPRS.

An extension to the GUIPRS up to a maximum of six months may be approved for doctoral candidates, provided the candidate is making satisfactory progress and only where the grounds for the extension:

Relate to the study and are beyond the control of the candidate and could not have been reasonably anticipated at the commencement of the program; or

Are on the basis of the candidate undertaking an industry placement, research internship, or professional practice activity of more than 30 days duration, approved by the Dean Research as part of the HDR program, as per Section 4.7 of these Conditions of Award.

A request for an extension should be made within a reasonable period before (and at least one month before) the expiry date of the award.

BENEFIT:

Tuition fees: Covers tuition fees for up to three and a half years for doctoral candidates and up to two years for research master’s candidates.

OSHC: Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the candidate. Research candidates are required to hold a visa for their program length plus an additional nine months to allow for interactive thesis marking. Candidates undertaking a PhD will require 57 months of overseas health cover. Holders of Griffith University scholarships will receive cover (if undertaking a PhD) for 57 months.

Student Services and Amenities Fee: Covers the fee for which the scholarship recipient would otherwise be liable.

UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG (HKU) SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAMME

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Summer Research Programme (“the Programme”) 2026 is a 10-week intense research training programme with networking and extracurricular activities for elite students around the world who are interested in pursuing postgraduate research studies at HKU.

ELIGIBILITY:

Target participants: Outstanding undergraduate students in year 3 and year 4 with a CGPA of 3.6 or above (or equivalent)
Outstanding students in Master’s degree programme with a Bachelor’s degree in 1st Class Honours (or equivalent)

Selection criteria:
Outstanding academic performance
Strong interest in research postgraduate studies
Previous research experience
Interest in interdisciplinary studies
High English proficiency
Mature and independent

Each participant of the Summer Research Programme will be affiliated to an academic unit and mentored by a professoriate staff. 

You have to indicate your proposed faculty*/interdisciplinary area, department, and field of study in the application based on your research interest. You are strongly encouraged to propose one or more professoriate staff (mentors) you would like to work with in your application. The online application system will be open from January 9, 2026 (10am Hong Kong Time GMT+8) to February 9, 2026 (5pm Hong Kong Time GMT+8).  The application fee (non-refundable) is HK$300.

Research interest (100-200 words): Visit the homepage of your proposed faculty/department/unit and describe the research topic(s) that interest you, and the area(s) that you would like to focus on if you are admitted to the HKU Summer Research Programme 2026.

Supporting documents: passport-size photo; your CV highlighting your academic achievement, research experience, and professional credentials, final/latest transcript and certificate of your Bachelor’s programme, final/latest transcript and certificate of your Master’s programme (if any), result of your English language proficiency test (for applicants from institutions outside Hong Kong where the language of instruction and examination is not entirely in English).

BENEFIT:

One-to-one mentorship with an eminent professor: Successful applicants will be supervised by an eminent professor at HKU to plan and carry out a research project. The Programme office will help participants match with mentors based on participants’ given priorities and research interests.

Scholarship for participants: A scholarship of HK$10,0001 will be awarded to each participant upon successful completion of the Programme.  

Financial support: Financial support of airfare up to HK$5,000 and university accommodation up to HK$5,0001 will be provided on a reimbursement basis. (Students residing or currently studying in Hong Kong are only eligible to receive financial support for university accommodation.)

Prizes and awards for top performers: Prizes and awards will be available for top performers in the Programme.  

Possible conditional offer for an HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship : A small number of participants with outstanding performance and excellent academic records may be awarded a conditional offer of the HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship to pursue PhD studies at HKU upon completion of the current studies.  The HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship is the most prestigious entrance scholarship to attract top students from around the world to pursue full-time PhD studies at HKU. The scholarship package includes up to HK$439,500 (US$56,350) in the first year and up to HK$422,000 (US$54,110) in each of the subsequent years during the normative study period.
