HASSO-PLATTNER INSTITUTE (HPI) RESEARCH SCHOOL AT UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN

The Hasso-Plattner Institute (HPI) Research School at University of Cape Town, affiliated with the School of Information Technology at the University of Cape Town, annually grants PhD and Postdoctoral fellowships to qualifying students from the African continent in the fields of Computer Science (CS) and Information Systems (IS). 

ELIGIBILITY:

Hold a Masters (or PhD for Postdoctoral candidates) Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field, supported by a good dissertation.

Be proficient in English as attested by a recent score (obtained within 3 – 5 years before application for admission) of at least 570 (paper-based test) or 230 (computer-based test) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or a recent overall band score of 7.0 (with no individual element of the test scoring below 6.0) on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). If your medium of education was in English then you are exempt from this requirement.

    BENEFIT:

    Accepted candidates should be prepared to study full-time in Cape Town, South Africa, and will be required to secure a study visa. Members of the research school receive funding of EUR 1050/month (paid in ZAR up to ZAR 17,000/month) towards fees and expenses, a one-time equipment allowance of EUR 1000, and annual support of up to EUR 2000 for conference attendance. Each member may normally be funded for up to 3 years, subject to degree requirements and demonstration of adequate progress

    MSC IN MACHINE LEARNING & ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AT STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY

    The MSc in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence is a one-year structured master’s programme at Stellenbosch University, designed for students with a strong mathematical and computational background. It will equip you with the fundamentals of ML and AI, plus a suite of sophisticated techniques and concepts at the research forefront of these fields. Applications for 2025 are open!

    ELIGIBILITY:

    As a minimum requirement for admission, you must have one of the following qualifications by the time of enrolment:

    an honours degree in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Mathematical Statistics;

    a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering;

    an NQF level 8 qualification deemed equivalent to the above, in a field closely linked to ML and AI.

    You should also have existing and demonstrable proficiency in Python or an equivalent programming language, and be comfortable with numerical linear algebra, vector calculus, basic probability theory and statistics. Though not strictly required, it is highly recommended that you should have already completed an introductory course on machine learning.

    Due to capacity limitations, a selection committee will give final approval for admission. Preference may be given to students with higher marks and with preceding studies better aligned with the programme’s specialisation.

    BENEFIT:

    A small number of full scholarships available for students from Africa. If you complete an application for the programme before 15 August, you will also be considered for a scholarship. Successful applicants will be notified in September.
