MARGARET BUSBY NEW DAUGHTERS OF AFRICA AWARD AT SOAS UNIVERSITY OF LONDON

Apply for the Margaret Busby New Daughters of Africa Award at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, for eligible programmes commencing in September 2026. You must be a Black female student ordinarily resident in Africa to be considered for the opportunity.

ELIGIBILITY:

Eligible programmes:

Full-time MA African Studies

Full-time MA Comparative Literature

Full-time MA Translation (in African Languages)

Part-time programmes are not eligible.

Applicants must:

Be a new admission, starting in September 2026.

Have a particular interest in African Literature with the aim to support a new generation of African female writers.

Be a Black, female student ordinarily resident in Africa.  

Hold an offer to pursue one of the eligible degree programs at SOAS by the time the scholarship panel meets.

Meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS as soon as possible.

Please note that this scholarship does not cover funding or even allow for pre-sessional programmes.

Applicants must have submitted a complete admission by the scholarship application deadline. The panel will be considering your scholarship application together with your online application for admission.

Scholarship applications must be received by 12 noon UK local time on 27 April 2026. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. 

In order to be considered for the scholarship, you must submit a complete online application to your programme. They recommend you apply for the programme about six weeks before the scholarship deadline to ensure you have an offer at the time of shortlisting. 

Complete applications for admission can take up to 4 weeks to be considered by the department, although this duration can vary depending on the time of year. You should be prepared to wait up to 6 weeks in busy periods.

BENEFIT:

The total value of the Margaret Busby New Daughters of Africa scholarship will be at least £30,000.

Accommodation for the scholar will be generously provided at International Students House. Tuition fees will be deducted from this amount and any remainder may be used towards maintenance.

SOAS UNIVERSITY OF LONDON ORTIGIA POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

The SOAS University of London Ortigia Postgraduate Scholarship is open to those who were the first in their family to go to university or who are resident in a country where there is conflict, extreme challenge or adversity. Applicants who would not have considered the programme without the opportunity afforded by this scholarship are strongly encourage to applys.

ELIGIBILITY:

One Ortigia Scholarship is available for the 2026/27 academic year running from 28 September 2026 to 4 August 2027. Recipients of the scholarship will complete the following modules:

Arts of India

Analysing and Exploring the Arts

Arts of China

Arts of Japan & Korea or Arts of the Buddhist World

The Independent Study Project in Asian Art History or Asian Art: Theories, Practices and Objects

Applicants must:

Already hold an offer of a place on the SOAS-Alphawood Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art.

Possess or expect to be awarded a 2:1 or above, an equivalent non-UK qualification, or equivalent professional experience. Students with a non-UK degree are to be adjudged by their referees and transcript.

Be either the first in their family to go to university or resident in a country where there is conflict, extreme challenge or adversity.

Provide a supporting statement (two pages maximum) stating why they wish to take this programme and how this scholarship will make a difference to them. This statement must also speak to how they meet the eligibility criteria as either the first in their family to go to university or resident in a country where there is conflict, extreme challenge or adversity

International students must demonstrate that they meet SOAS’s English language requirements by the 17 July 2026.

BENEFIT:

This scholarship covers full tuition fees for the in-person pathway of the SOAS-Alphawood Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art and an allowance to cover living costs during term time.
