AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO (AUC) AFRICAN GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS

The African Graduate Fellowship is a competitive fellowship program for bright, highly motivated African students interested in pursuing a master’s degree at The American University in Cairo (AUC). Each year, fellowships are offered to nationals of African countries (not including Egyptians) for full-time study; nine credits or as required by the program in any of the graduate programs offered at the AUC.

ELIGIBILITY:

Non-Egyptian African nationals

African nationals with dual non-African nationality are not eligible

Open to all disciplines of graduate studies

For new graduate degree-seeking students, admission to one of the graduate programs in AUC, satisfying AUC graduate admissions requirements

Submit an International TOEFL iBT exam score or academic IELTS exam score as per the cut-off scores for AUC graduate admissions

For continuing students, to retain the fellowship, the recipient must maintain a GPA of 3.2

Financial need

Duration: The fellowship is awarded for a maximum duration of five semesters and one intervening summer session, with a review every semester for satisfactory academic performance. For the Counseling Psychology graduate program, the duration may be extended to a maximum of seven semesters.

The fellowship covers:

Tuition fees, for a maximum of nine credits per semester

Stipend

Student services and activities fees

Medical service and health insurance fees

Monthly housing allowance or accommodation in University residences at the AUC New Cairo campus

May cover remedial English language requirements

CEGA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM: 2025-2026 REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS

The Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) invites African researchers to apply to our 2025-2026 Fellowship Program Request for Applications (RFA). In this call, CEGA invites researchers from East and West Africa interested in developing their skills in quantitative social science research (including impact evaluation) to apply for a 16-week in-person fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley (offered both Fall 2025 and Spring 2026) or at Northwestern University (offered Spring 2026 only). For this upcoming call, interested applicants can apply to 1 of 3 research tracks: General Development Research, Early Childhood Development, or Youth Livelihoods.

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants to the CEGA Fellowship Program must:

Be fluent in English (written and spoken), and a strong communicator.

Be from an East African or West African country and have completed secondary school education in an African institution.

Be an early career scholar, as defined by recently having completed a Master’s degree or a PhD, or be currently enrolled in a PhD program in economics, political science, statistics, epidemiology/public health, education, or another social science discipline. Preference will be given to those who are currently enrolled or have finished their PhD within the last 8 years.

Hold a current staff or student position with a research institution (university or other research organization) in East or West Africa, preferably one that supports policy-relevant, quantitative social science research;

BENEFIT:

The fellowship covers candidates’ roundtrip flights, accommodation, meals, visa fees and health insurance for the duration of the fellowship period. In addition, fellows receive a small stipend of XX Amount for miscellaneous expenses, and may be sponsored to visit other university campuses. However, the fellowship does not provide a salary for fellows’ time. Fellows will need to make arrangements with their university/organization to take leave with or without pay for the duration of the fellowship.
