UNCW (STATE) PHD IN INTEGRATIVE AND COMPARATIVE BIOLOGY

The UNC Wilmington Animal eVolution & Ecology Lab (WAVE Lab) in the Department of Biology & Marine Biology is seeking an applicant for admittance into the Integrative and Comparative Biology PhD program at UNC Wilmington, in Wilmington, North Carolina, beginning January 2027 (somewhat flexible). The program is in-person with no remote options. 

ELIGIBILITY:

Desired qualifications include (seeking some, but not all): 

Training in mammal or bird ecology & evolution; 

Quantitative skills in color science, including receptor-noise limited models as implemented in R or python to test hypotheses regarding camouflage ecology; 

Quantitative skills in comparative analyses including ancestral state reconstructions, phylogenetic path analyses, Phylogenetic Generalized Least Squares, and/or Bayesian Phylogenetic Mixed Models; 

Experience working with Resonon hyperspectral cameras; 

Experience with Ocean Optics spectrophotometry equipment; 

Remote field work experience in extreme environments (such as southwestern US deserts and high-altitude environments); 

Experience conducting research in museum collections; 

Molecular skills, including sample collection on wild animals, DNA extraction, and amplification of MC1R and ASIP genes, and subsequent analyses; 

A publication record reflecting the applicant’s career stage; 

Completed BS and MS programs.

Initial screening interviews are anticipated to commence in mid-September, with the potential to visit campus during the fall semester. The successful applicant will be expected to apply for the graduate program, with the understanding that the final decision regarding admittance into the program is determined by the UNCW Department of Biology & Marine Biology Graduate Advisory Committee and the Graduate College. 

The successful applicant will have an interest in animal color ecology & evolution, camouflage ecology, animal ecology, quantitative and technical skills in hyperspectral equipment, and molecular skills as demonstrated by previous research experience. The successful candidate will explore hypotheses of camouflage ecology in mammals and birds.

ELIGIBILITY:

Undergraduate students in the penultimate year of a STEM-related major and graduating after August 2026

Minimum CGPA of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent

Enrolment letter from the university registrar showing admission date, program duration, and expected graduation date

Official academic transcript listing all courses, grades, and credit hours

Proof of English proficiency through a valid certificate of any of the following:

IELTS Academic: Minimum overall score of 6.5

TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 90

PTE Academic: Minimum overall score of 60

Cambridge C1 Advanced: Minimum 180

Cambridge C2 Proficiency: Minimum score 200 (meets and exceeds required proficiency)

Duolingo English Test: Minimum score of 120. (Accepted only where IELTS/TOEFL/PTE/Cambridge access is limited. A mandatory interview is required. Evidence of limited access to other tests may be requested.)

OR an official letter from the University registrar confirming English is the medium of instruction

Valid color passport copy (minimum one year validity)

Statement of purpose essay, including:

Motivation for applying

Personal and academic background and how it makes you suitable for the UGRIP

Stand-out achievements (e.g., awards, distinctions, etc.)

Goals as a prospective UGRIP participant

Preferred career path and plans

Any other relevant details that will support the application.
