The Fund Internship Program (FIP) offers PhD students in economics an outstanding opportunity to contribute to the work of one of the world’s leading international financial institutions. If you’re passionate about macroeconomics, international policy, and research that can make a global impact, the Fund Internship Program could be your next step.

ELIGIBILITY:

To be considered for the 2027 Fund Internship Program—Economists, you must:

Be within one to two years of completing a PhD in macroeconomics or a related field.

Be enrolled as a student at the time of the internship and return to your academic studies afterward.

Be under the age of 32 when the internship begins in June 2027.

Demonstrate excellent written and spoken English.

Possess strong analytical, quantitative, and computer skills.

Application Requirements:

As part of your online application, you must complete the technical questionnaire and upload the following documents:

Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume

Statement of Interest or Cover Letter explaining your motivation for applying to the IMF

Evidence of current student status and academic performance, including either:

A recent transcript from your current university program, or

A letter from your university confirming active enrollment and recent grades.

Incomplete applications will not be considered. Only candidates selected for further consideration will be contacted by a member of the FIP recruitment team. Previous participants in the Fund Internship Program are not eligible and should not reapply.

If you are not a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or otherwise authorized to work in the United States, you will require a G4 visa. The IMF will provide the documentation needed to support your visa application with U.S. authorities.

BENEFIT:

The Fund Internship Program is a full-time, paid internship requiring 40 hours of work per week.

Internships last between 10 and 12 weeks.

The start of the 2027 internship is June 7, 2027 (ending August 27, 2027).

The Internship Programme aims to attract talented young women and men who are strongly motivated to share their new perspectives, innovative ideas, and latest academic experience in FAO’s domains. The Programme provides a learning opportunity to the participants to supplement their academic knowledge with a practical work assignment in a field related to the work of FAO.

Minimum Requirements:

Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree programme in a “bona fide” educational institution at the time of application or as a recent graduate. Please note that FAO only considers higher educational qualifications obtained from an institution accredited/recognized in the World Higher Education Database (WHED), a list updated by the International Association of Universities (IAU)/United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The list can be accessed at http://www.whed.net/.
Candidates must specialize in a field relevant to the mission and work of FAO.
Working knowledge of at least one FAO language (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian or Spanish). Knowledge of a second FAO language will be considered an asset.

Be nationals of FAO Members.

Candidates should be aged between 21 and 30.

Candidates should be able to adapt to an international multicultural environment and have good communication skills.

Candidates with family members (defined as mother, father, sister, or brother) employed by FAO under any type of contractual arrangement are not eligible for the Internship Programme.

BENEFIT:

FAO provides a monthly stipend to interns if they are not sponsored by sending universities or other entities.
