This is a prestigious and competitive Simmons scholarship offered to students with exceptional academic achievements, a strong commitment to their community, and a passion for creating positive change in society. Scholars become part of a dynamic campus community that offers a multitude of opportunities for personal and intellectual growth, cultural exploration, and social engagement.

ELIGIBILITY:

Students applying for the Simmons Distinguished Scholar Award must meet the following criteria:

Apply as a first-year student for the fall semester

A minimum GPA of 3.50

A record of taking college prep, AP, honors, or IB Courses

English Proficiency is required for non-native English speakers.

Standardized test scores (optional) of 28+ ACT or 1300+ SAT

Community Involvement: Applicants should showcase a history of active engagement in their community through volunteer work, leadership roles, or other forms.

Passion for the Field: Applicants should demonstrate a passion for their chosen field of study. This passion should be evident in their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and resume.

Students who meet the criteria above are often also interested in the Honors Program at Simmons.

The application consists of a formal essay in response to the essay prompt. Students should submit their essay through the Common Application or in PDF or Word Doc via email with the subject line “Simmons Distinguished Scholar Award application” by December 1. Each page of the document should include the student’s full name and date of birth.

BENEFIT:

This scholarship covers full tuition, mandatory fees (except health insurance), room & board for four years, and supersedes any previous merit scholarship.

OIST RESEARCH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The OIST Graduate School offers education and research opportunities through our Research Internship program in STEM fields. The internship is typically 3 to 6 months. These short-term placements give students the opportunity to gain experience in a particular laboratory or to learn a specific technique. Research Interns will work under the direction of a Professor and contribute to the research activities of OIST.

ELIGIBILITY:

Those who are currently enrolled in their last two years of a bachelor’s degree, enrolled in any year of a master’s degree in universities, colleges, junior colleges, and vocational schools in Japan or overseas, or those who have graduated with a bachelor’s or master’s degree, are eligible to apply for the Research Internship at OIST.

Currently enrolled students must have approval from their home institution. The academic background of applicants should be appropriate to their desired host unit(s) at OIST.

Research Interns who belong to a Japanese university/institution are required to prepare and bring their own insurances when accepted to the OIST Research Internship program. Acceptable insurances are the combination of Gakkensai and Gakkenbai, or other insurances with similar coverage.

BENEFIT:

The following supports are only available for the research intern and do not extend to dependents, family members, or others.

Internship Allowance: 2,400 JPY per working day

Commuting Allowance: OIST Shuttle Bus Pass

Travel Expenses: One direct round-trip air ticket (travel date will be closest date to the term of placement)

Accommodation: Furnished accommodation on or off campus

Administrative Support: Acquisition of Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) for your visa application and as well as registration procedures
