The university will offer PhD scholarships for students starting their PhD research at the university in the 2027-2028 academic session. In order to attract the best and brightest PhD students, the university seeks to offer not only unparalleled research facilities and superb supervision but also development opportunities that will support our research students as they progress beyond their PhD through an exciting scholarship scheme.

ELIGIBILITY:

The awards are open to UK and overseas students applying to start their first year of study for an on-campus research degree in 2027-2028.

Applicants must have already applied for admission to a first year of full-time or part-time on-campus or distance PhD study at the university. We encourage applicants who wish to apply for this scholarship to make contact with their academic school regarding any admission deadlines.

Please check the entry requirements for your proposed programme of study for details of other acceptable English language qualifications. 

You may apply for the scholarship prior to obtaining the necessary English language test results, but the results should be uploaded as soon as possible.

These awards cannot be held concurrently with fully-funded scholarships but can be held with partially-funded scholarships and will be reduced pro-rata.

Applicants must be of outstanding academic merit and research potential. Candidates must have, or expect to obtain, a UK first-class or 2:1 honours degree at the undergraduate level or the international equivalent.

Other factors such as financial status, nationality, and the proposed field of study are not taken into account.

The university will not generally consider candidates who have already obtained a PhD or formal equivalent as a result of direct research training.

BENEFIT:

Each scholarship covers the university tuition fee as well as a stipend equivalent to the UKRI stipend rate (for 2026-2027 this is currently £21,805), subject to satisfactory progress. The scholarships are awarded for between three and four years as agreed by the school/college (or pro rata for part-time).

GRADUATE STUDENT (M.S.) – ROADSIDE POLLINATOR HABITAT RESTORATION AND NATIVE BEE ECOLOGY (AUBURN UNIVERSITY)

The Auburn University Native Bee Lab, housed within the Auburn University Bee Center, is seeking a highly motivated M.S. student to join our research program focused on pollinator conservation and habitat restoration in the southeastern United States. The successful applicant will work on a collaborative research project funded by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) to evaluate strategies for establishing and managing native wildflower habitats along roadsides to benefit native pollinators. Review of applications will begin now through September 15, 2026, or until a suitable candidate is found.

ELIGIBILITY:

Required qualifications: An undergraduate degree in Biology, Ecology, Entomology, Botany, or a related field from an accredited institution in the United States or an equivalent institution abroad is required to begin an M.S. program. The selected individual must meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time of appointment.

Desired qualifications: Experience contributing to native pollinator research is ideal. Specifically, experience with plant and native bee identification is optimal. However, finding an individual who is hard-working, collaborative, organized, a team player, and has a strong passion for learning is equally important.

The selected student will be expected to assume a leadership role within the laboratory by mentoring undergraduate researchers and assisting with laboratory and field operations. Numerous opportunities exist to develop expertise in native bee taxonomy, pollination ecology, restoration ecology, experimental design, and scientific communication.

The student will also participate in the collaborative atmosphere of the Auburn University Native Bee Lab through outreach activities, guest lectures, extension programming, and interdisciplinary research projects.

Opportunities for collaboration are extensive within Auburn University’s Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, the College of Agriculture, and with state and federal agencies, including the Alabama Department of Transportation.

BENEFIT:

Salary range and other benefits: Starting salary of $25,000 for M.S. program with opportunities for advancement depending on performance. The individual will be assigned a Graduate Research Assistant position that includes a full tuition waiver.
